1. Scott Tinkler Quartet - Live (Origin Australia). Blistering brilliance from the Melbourne trumpeter and pals.
2. Bill Holman Band - Live (Origin US). Veteran west coast master makes it big, brassy and brilliant.
3. The Java Quartet - Deep Blue Sea (Vitamin Records). Superbly simple grooves of elegance and low-key funkiness.
4. Paul Grabowsky - Hush Collection Vol 3 (www.hush.org.au). A beguiling suite of healing beauty.
5. Mike Wofford - Live at Athenaeum Jazz (Capri Records). Piano trio magnificence from an unsung master.
6. The Brian VanArsdale Orchestra - The Flood (Independent). A sprawling epic that surges and swirls.
7. The Providers - The Providers (Provided Records). A finger-snapping riot of swinging soul and R&B.
8. Paul Williamson's Hammond Combo - Month of Mondays, The Blues (Newmarket Music). The kings of soul 'n' groove at home in the Rainbow Hotel.
9. Paul Williamson Sextet - On the Surface, in the Core (Newmarket Music). Crew of Melbourne stars in hot form on two discs.
10. Andrea Keller - Angels and Rascals (ABC/Universal). Another bewitching gem from the Melbourne pianist.
I was a little surprised how may Australian discs I ended up with, as much of my focus during the year was on older American music - everything from the Dead to numerous Mosaic boxes. But I don't do reissues in our annual double-page round-up in the Sunday Herald Sun, so there you go.
