Just recieved this email from John Pochee. Farewell to a legend of Australian jazz. Hi Everyone,
Just to let everyone know, Joe Lane passed away peacefully in the Nursing Home last night, Friday 13th around 6pm. He had dinner, fell asleep and left us...as he would have wanted...with a full stomach. He had just celebrated his 80th birthday.
Watch the Herald for details of the funeral etc.
regards, JP

Joe was the real deal, a true Ozjazz original. He only had to sing one note for you to know you were in Jazzland. I will never forget his passion for the music. And for Ava Gardner. Thanks Joe.

Joe was such an icon...I never forget sitting with Rod Mayhew at the North Indian Diner and Joe came and sat down with us, then started to talk about meeting Charlie Parker in 1959 while eating food off our plates. It was always a blast listening to Joe sing and talk. He will be sadly missed.

My favorite Joe memory was the time Serge Ermoll invited me to lunch with him & Joe at Chinta Ria. We had an enormous lunch, plenty of beers, plenty of stories. When the bill came, Serge graciously said, "I've got this". He then stood up, announced to all present that the World's Greatest Bebop Singer was in our midst : Joe sprang up, sang a few choruses of Scrapple From The Apple (complete with air saxophone), got a round of applause, and Serge gave the (unpaid) bill to the waiter and said, "I believe that should cover it for us".
