The ARIA finallists are out, and the good news is that all the usual suspects have been rounded up. (Except The Necks. Did they not release something this year?)
Andrea Keller: Footprints Deni Hines & James Morrison: The other woman Joe Chindamo: Duende Grace Knight: Willow Mike Nock: Meeting of the waters Oehlers/Grabowsky/Beck: Lost and found
Snore.

It could be worse - Tracey Bartram could've released an album...

Grace Knight? Oh yeah, I heard her at the Make It Up Club.
Seriously...it would be interesting to know more about the selection process and how they arrive at the final list and how many are submitted. I think a lot of the finalists are deserving, but it does seem that it is largely the same names each year. Maybe they cut and paste ;-)

As far as I know, nominations come from either artists, managers or record companies, ie anyone can nominate themselves. (Not sure if there is some fee involved). Votes are then submitted by those who are invited to judge (media types & industry types), with the onus on the judges to elect to vote or abstain, depending on whether they feel they have enough knowledge in the various categories. I don't think the ARIA people disclose who votes in what category, but I think they have announced the names of judges in previous years (maybe it's on their website now?), and you can take a guess from there as to who is likely to vote in the jazz category.

3 out of 6 ain't bad,
Come one Semi-Deni!!!!
What's really weird is I wasn't nominated for my album - Guts plays the Fuck - don't know why, I did tunes by Deni such as -'I can't hold a note' and 'letting the Family down', and some by James 'another notch in the belt' and ' I want more cars'.

it seems that many of the same old names come up in other categories too e.g.
The 2008 ARIA Awards also sees nominations for a host of artists including THE PANICS, BRITISH INDIA etc, ..... and more established artists THE WIGGLES, GYROSCOPE, SILVERCHAIR, KYLIE MINOGUE, ANDREA KELLER, JOHN BUTLER TRIO, RICHARD TOGNETTI, PETE MURRAY, HI-5, SLAVA GRIGORYAN, DELTA GOODREM, TINA ARENA, BEN LEE, LIOR, JIMMY BARNES, SARA STORER, THE WAIFS, THE AUDREYS, PAUL KELLY, CATHERINE BRITT and CUT COPY have also received nominations for the 2008 ARIA Awards.
Andrea got in the list next to Kylie and I've never seen Ms Keller's bum in a pair of gold leather shorts (not that there is anything wrong with that). Wonders will never cease.

As far as I know, nominations come from either artists, managers or record companies, ie anyone can nominate themselves. (Not sure if there is some fee involved) No, only record companies can nominate (ARIA is an association of record companies). And only record companies who are members of ARIA. The record companies generally put all their releases forward in each category. All the majors, large independents (often distributed by majors anyway) and some small labels are members of ARIA. Small labels can join ARIA for a few hundred dollars a year. If your record label is not an ARIA member you're out of the race.

I heard that Tinkler-Chaplin-Rex-Lambie all bought private jets after their CD won an ARIA, and sales got an extra boost in the following week.

that was pets, not jets, Lambie got a Labrador, Tinkler got a Python, Rex got a goat and Chaplin got a really aggressive Chiquia, also it was the sale (singular) that got a boost to sales (2)

Was that first sale before or after the positive review (aka Kiss of Death) in Rhythms magazine?
