Melbourne's so great ( ) that the jazz festival even makes it into the sports pages... Here's some of "Will Minson" from The Age website www.theage.com.au/news/rfnews/observations-from-round-four/2009/04/19/1240079539602.html?page=2ASK WILL We've had a few rounds to settle in, Will. So who do you think is ready to start making a big noise? Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, that's who. Cecil Taylor, Joshua Redman Trio, Actis Data Quartet, if you fancy an Italian horn injection to your aurally aromatic polyrhythms and syncopation. Julien Wilson Quintet with Jim Black. Bill Frisell. Katie Noonan. Oh, be still my beating heart! What a blessed time to be in Melbourne - golden leaves crunching underfoot like opposition midfielders, a sparkling new recital centre with a pitch to make one tremble, and now a line-up to do it justice! Be merciful, Master Eade, for your granite-edged ruckman-forward with the encephalonic capacity of an IBM zSeries 800 may not have his gargantuan mind entirely on the job in the ensuing fortnight, such are the delicious distractions afoot. From Hamer Hall to the Malthouse, the Iwaki Auditorium to the guilty pleasures of my sweet Bennett's Lane. Life could only be better if the Bulldogs had recruited Paul Grabowsky instead of Jason Akermanis.

Julien Wilson Quintet with Jim Black. Bill Frisell. Katie Noonan. Oh, be still my beating heart! I wonder whether Will's heart was beating because of Julien, Jim, Bill or Katie. Or all four. I'd better stock up on the blood pressure tablets. I do like the idea of Grabowsky playing for the Dogs. And sport's just about the only section in newspapers that's not being cut back these days, so why not plug jazz there. Good move. One of these days the Hun may run my Charlie Haden yarn, but probably not before his gigs at MIJF are over (sour grapes, sour grapes).

Oh no that's the gig i was REALLY looking forward to. Cecil Taylor is of course an incredibly important voice in improvised music, so too is Tony Oxley. Anyone know what is happening with it... is whole concert cancelled?

While you lot have been enjoying the Melbourne Jazz Festival, I've been stuck here in New York forced to make do with Chris Potter's Underground, Randy Brecker (took a Grammy this year but don't hold that against him), Lenny White, the awesome Antonio Hart, Ray Drummond and heaps more. All this while dodging swine flu (some people in Manhattan actually wearing facemasks).
Randy Brecker is looking increasingly like Paul Grabowsky's twin brother, but I didn't have my glasses on.
Oh yeah, and I finally found good coffee.

Is there a gay-haired trumpeter out there who can tell me what was the significance of the terms "adobe" and "probe" in the title of Tim Berne's gig and second set piece at Bennett's? Was there a sponsorship deal with the software purveyor? Was the probe painful?
BTW, that gig was the highlight of the festival for me, particularly the first set. Not sure that Hamer Hall is the place for the next such probe, though it is a pity if people were being turned away from BLane.

I can answer part of your question, Roger. Yes, there is a gay-haired trumpeter out there.

Oh, ha ha,,,,,
All I know is Adobe and Probe should sound similar but don't, very strange language.
There were a few probing moments through the week, but the only pain was in the mornings for some strange reason.

I had a ball last night at the Jam playing with a version of my band, circa 2003-4. Thanks Marc, Al and Scrote. Sometimes good things can happen at Jam sessions. Including the 'Mood Indigo' performed by gargling Gin on mic by two Jazz stars. Nice harmonies fellas....
