It certainly was a "quizzical note" - what a ridiculous way to finish an otherwise thoughtful review! One my say it was even a little condescending. Is John Clare just having a shit-stir?!
Perhaps if there had been 3 nights in Melbourne John would've seen the cream of Melbourne's piano playing community there. Mark were you there in Sydney every night? Was Matt there every night? Or Mike? You know John, Melbourne piano players do gig at venues other than Bennetts...
And why the rant about Melbourne not inventing eclectic jazz related music? Well derr! And to then make a random list of great Sydney bands - so what! We know they're great - and when those bands come to Melbourne, we go see them.
And sure, there are guys in Melbourne who aren't into bebop, but I've never heard anyone seriously say that they are "beyond that".

Typical Sydney penis envy. Melbourne's just better, that's all. In fact, didn't Melbourne invent jazz?

McGann was puzzled that none of the piano players he knew showed up. No disrespect, but does he know all of the piano players in Melbourne.
On another note, who publicised the gig? I didn't hear about it until the night before. Too late.
PLUS
The gigs in Sydney were late in the week whereas the Melbourne show was on a Tuesday?!?!!?!?!

It was a poorly publicised gig (the usual Co-op brochure, ad in Friday's Age, etc), but got no editorial coverage that I'm aware of...............probably not helped by the fact it was on a Tuesday. So there wasn't much of a crowd, piano-playing or otherwise.
Speaking of publicity, do people know John Surman's on at the Meat Market tomorrow and Saturday? (I hope every baritone/soprano saxophonist & bass clarinetist in town is in attendance).

What a clown. It must be a burden having the sun shine so brightly from your cakehole that you always have to wank in the dark. This, anyway, is the result.

I hope every baritone/soprano saxophonist & bass clarinetist in town is in attendance). Since this is jazz-gig-Nirvana Melbourne, won't they all be working? I'm going to hear Melbourne jazz in Sydney tonight, Browne-Hannaford-Anning. But that's only because I don't have any gigs.... yet.

I played golf with Scott Tinkler & Wilbur Wilde today. Disappointed to see no trumpeters or tenor players in the gallery.

Such a jarring note after the unmistakably exuberant tone of the review itself. Very odd! While I was at the SIMA site, I saw this www.sima.org.au/2009/02/26/the-necks-in-north-americaand Lloyd Swanton's reply: www.sima.org.au/2009/03/17/lloyd-swanton-replied-to-john-litweilerWow. Although I'm not a big fan of The Necks (being a more "pure" impro guy myself) I respect them considerably and don't doubt their integrity. You don't have to have been at that concert to see that this Litweiler guy did his best to belittle them, I'd say. Good on Lloyd Swanton for taking him to task in a methodical manner, though in my experience in these matters (as a visual artist; I'm not a muso) critics almost always insist on having the last say (let's face it, not having the last say would raise too many awkward questions about their very existence as critics!), and it's ultimately futile.

They may have done...you could add it to a long list of wonderful French inventions...red wine, cheese, bread, stripy shirts, enormous useless towers, the notion of surrender...
