Boot on other foot. Just returned from Browne-Hannaford-Anning. The only musician I knew there was Dave Panichi, who taught Marc in Canberra. A truly brilliant night of music-making that will stay with me for a long, long time. There should have been Sydney pianists, bassists and drummers coming out of the woodwork. On another note I'm never shaking Marc Hannaford's hand again. He squeezed so fucking hard that he undid a day's practice, and it was no momentary thing. He held on for what seemed like an eternity, I had to really nurse it for a while after (not kidding). I couldn't help but wonder whether he - even subconsciously - liked to try to to immobilise other pianists a bit Lighten your grip Marc (but not at the keyboard).

You seem to be spoiling for a fight. We don't need to go there. You reckon I'm soft. I reckon you're holding to a bullish self-image. Likely the truth lies in the middle. Shall we leave it there?

Boys, boys, PLEASE!
Now, if we can just get back on topic...
I thought John Clare's comment was really ironic considering (and I'm sure most Melbourne and Sydney musos would agree) the exact opposite usually holds - Melbourne always manages a good turnout for visiting Sydney bands, but Sydney rollups for Melbourne bands are too often a bit light on.

I guess John's comment was more about the relative responses between the two cities to a distinguished international figure co-leading with an Australian icon in Bernie. And particularly in relation to the number of musicians present. I made the point to John last night that was made earlier here about Melbourne musicians being more likely to have gigs on a week night. He conceded it.
Actually the turnout for Browne-Hannaford-Anning was excellent. Allan gave me the impression he was more than pleased with the 70 or so people who came (my estimate). There just weren't any musicians there (apart from Panichi and me if you can call us musicians).
But just as Melbourne musicians are likely to be doing jazz gigs on weeknights, Sydney musicians are likely to be doing function and other bread-and-butter gigs on end-of-week nights when we have our jazz gigs.
So in the end maybe it's all understandable and it's all good.

Was this Marc Hannaford? or Mark Latham?
