Wonderful concert last night in the ghastly BMW Edge; even after waiting in the queue for over an hour and having to stand for the length of the performance it was a sensational delight. Congratulations to everyone involved.

I only caught the last 10-15mins between sets a gig I was doing nearby. When I saw "caught", I mean "heard", as I couldn't see a thing. The audience was about 5 or 6 deep in the standing area at the back - surely a good sign for jazz on a very bleak evening.
And I actually thought the sound was pretty good - for BMW Edge anyway!

Thought you said my hair looked gay? You couldn't even see!! Maybe my hair sounded gay?
The audience was huge, hopefully they support the ticketed gigs too.
Sound on stage was good for BMW. The drapes and full room helped control the sound. Charlie had us playing pretty quiet overall so it worked out well on stage. Was a bit weird having him in front of us but we got to watch him play the whole time.

I thought it was very thoughtful of the sound guys to make sure we only heard a distorted buzzy direct line bass sound for the first three tunes. A nice touch!

there was some discussion about that. We couldn't hear it but apparently words were said to bring it to the engineers attention! Mal Stanley didn't have any troubles though so hopefully it didn't go to air or to tape.

That's for the audience to tell, he was facing us! The only bums I could see were the sax players, those guys are all bums!

So was the concert recorded for a Jazztrack broadcast? What I heard sounded pretty damn good, but I'd like to hear the whole set some time. Or maybe they can just bring Charlie back to do it at Hamer Hall next year?

Yes, Mal recorded it all but only a bit more than half went to air as it went well over time. He's going to mix it then they will most likely play it again on the radio. Have to look at the diary but Hamer hall next year could work!

You should just become a singer like I told you to - you'd make a lot more money. Think of the children.

Was it just me or was the Charlie Haden, Bill Frisell, Ethan Iverson set a pile of shyte? The opening tune sounded like a high school jazz band and it didn't improve much from there. The worst part for me wasn't that it wasn't particluarly good musically(which in itself was a letdown), rather they didn't sound like they were trying - I would like some effort for my $80! Charlie, to my ears, sounded like he was doing the Charlie Haden act and not going for very much at all. Maybe he was exhausted after a big schedule of concerts - even so, if he committed to the gigs he should have put in! I don't think I am being a whinger - what did you all think?
On the other hand the opening set by PG et al was great. Well done to all!

I can't talk about their musical ability, but I did not think Charlie's heart was in it, or that his mind was on the job. I might have been imagining a lack of interest or communication — Charlie often seems to look down or at the charts while playing — but he did not seem to pay much attention to his fellow musicians. And there did not seem to be any fire in the bellies of this trio, really. From a guy who played with Ornette Coleman, and a Bad Plus man, I had expected something more out there. Bill Frisell always seems to play nice. that's my five cents' worth

Actually I thought it was crap too. Really, really dreadful. I was deeply disappointed. After really enjoying both Haden's other appearances, I thought this was a shocking letdown.

Expectations are high - concept is flawed. - the sensibilities of these 3 are just too disparate - particularly Iverson with the other two - I think a Frisell/Haden duet would have been a different story - and how are 3 guys who never play together supposed to suddenly be amazing..?
...when they are Berne, Black and Cline. playing free and listening like demons. Bloody Marvellous..
