Good chatter all this. I happened to be sipping a quiet beer with an unnamed US sax player post workshop with Ethan I on Friday and he received a text from a member of the trio that was to play at the Town Hall, after their sound check, that recommended that it was not worth the trip from the hotel to see the gig. This is a case where the thrown together may not have been a great idea. Since EI has got quite a name with the Bad plus people want to jump on the wagon, including Charlie. It becomes about who you're playing with, names, money etc, above the music at times, shame. I got the feeling from the Un Liberating gig I did that CH is quite the control freak nowadays. He loves to tell people what, when, why etc. With the Lib O it worked ok as it's all arranged and pre determined, in smaller ensembles where the interaction and spontaneity is paramount it just doesn't cut the mustard. Maybe for someone like CH, after all he has done, he needs people with him that he can't boss around? Frysle is one maybe, but not EI or Larry G etc. Music is best on an even playing field, and that's not just skill but attitude. Must say that's what us fellas got from Tim Berne. Really nice guy, no attitude except confidence and acceptance. He made it possible for us to ignore any 'NY' shit and just play with a guy that had some music that we could add to with our ideas. BBC was like that, all on the same page, tough fun music that had a strong group focus. That's what CH used to be involved in.

Interesting about CH being a control freak - the Lib. Orch. gig I saw in 1988 was looser than I.Guts after a Szechuan feast - characterised to no small degree by a fabulous 'inept' drum solo by none other than Paul Motian - who seemed to flail at everything on the kit without hitting it - while Charlie smiled and yelled encouragement...times they are a changin'

The catch phrase of the LO gig was " can we get more Charlie on stage!", we all had a go at that, even CH himself had a giggle.
