Hi I'm planning to trial a new interview format in extempore; it's been planned for a while and we'll start in Issue 3 or Issue 4 (depending how organised I get!) The idea is for a musician to interview a musician. Simon Barker talked to me about it years ago. Sean Wayland has just mentioned it to me again. I think it's a great idea. Taking into consideration that extempore has an Australian focus (so at least one of the musos would ideally be from here) does anybody have a wish list for this type of interview format? Who would you like to interview whom? And if you can be bothered... why? Thanks Miriam Oh, in case you don't know what extempore is: www.extempore.com.au

Good idea. Then musicians can interview music fans ...
Q: So, apart from the long breaks between sets, and the uncomfortable stools, and the rule about no texting while we are playing, what else do you hate?
A: Well I can't stand it when a gig is already on the program and the leading band member leaves for an academic gig in China, leaving us up the creek without a trumpet or a bucket of water.
etc

I would love to read what would come out of some rivals interviewing each other i.e. 50/50 but I think it might be fairer on the reader to set a question and word limit as some that come to mind might find it hard to be concise!
It could be quite a juicy little read.

The editor could help set the questions. It could be really funny.

That's a great idea Miriam,
Paul MacNamara: and underrated educator and pianist in Oz. Elliott Dalgleish: anyone who knows him knows why this would be great. Eugene Ball: he might give us some good recipes Lyn Wallace: Chris Tanner or Eamon or BenG should do that interview Steve Grant: genius

On a serious note whats to be gained by musicians interviewing other musicians? All you'll get is a very polite but full of bullshit interview. Whilst you might expect sparks you'll end up with a smooth suck up.

Hannaford and Chindamo and Grabbers at once.

Anyone who heard Grabba interview Peter Rechiewski at his (Peter's) book launch at Bennetts Lane would not call that interview a "smooth suck up." It was polite but forensic and Paul certainly wasn't afraid to ask some hard questions. I reckon Grabba/Chindamo would be fascinating. I also can't imagine Guts bothering to suck up. Here's another idea, Yvette Johannsen interviewing Tim Stevens OK I'm just being silly now... what about the other way round??
