How holier-than-thou you are. Like you never whinge (cough cough). And like it's just about me when there's an endemic problem being highlighted here which you choose to sweep under the carpet with condescending advice. Soft, Tinkler. Is this a serious comment?

Yes I whinge, your point being? Does that exclude me from thinking about it and voicing an idea? ( cough, splutter, puke)
Endemic? What is the endemic problem? Lack of audience? Lack of your audience? Lack of a Melbourne audience for your gigs? Lack of people who actually like this music? Maybe the endemic problem is artists like us that do something that most of the world does not give a fuck about? If, as you said, you had good crowds elsewhere then it must just be a Melbourne thing right? This being the case why was the MIJF, Stonnington and the Fringe well attended? You want a whinge? The world is a retarded place. Ken Edie cuts down trees for a living! James Morrison is rich!! SIMA decides who plays in what band!!!!! Fuck all people come to our gigs unless it's a BIG event!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't be SOFT Isaacs, you got more to whinge about than one unattended gig at Bennetts for fuck sake. I'm hardly sweeping it under the carpet, it's just such a fucking small aspect of the whole deal and this shit adds to a non existent idea of Sydney vs Melbourne.

We don't have an aversion to Sydney musos ... or do we? Good question Roger. Some of my colleagues here in Sydney (and I don't necessarily mean my band members) have already answered that question in the affirmative. If it's true, it's not mutual. Witness the sterling turnout for Browne-Hannaford-Anning in Sydney. Not so much musos (though I and a couple of other cats were there) just heaps of interested punters. I know of nobody in Melbourne who has a specific aversion to Sydney musos. We may not like Sydney, but that's another story! Mark, you lucked out. Gig numbers are fickle. Last night I was at Dizzy's and it was packed. Not a single spare seat, and that was on a miserable Tuesday night. Go figure!

Why in the world does Jimmy Morrison get no respect? What did he ever do to deserve this type of disrespect? Not too many people have done more to promote jazz & improvised music than James in this country.

His name is James, show some respect.
How has he promoted Jazz or improvised music? I would have thought he's promoted himself very well and had a lot of fun doing it.
Look, he is an extremely talented musician. He is an entertainer that people enjoy, otherwise he would not have the audience he does. But, and boy this but is bigger than his, he is not an improviser or an artist in my book, and I'm sure he doesn't care that I believe this, he is a happy man.
The best way to 'promote' (by which I would mean to further the progress of) this artform is to be vital and creative in the process of development of the music. Names like Mark Simmonds, Grabowsky, Trelour, Frampton, Buck, Nock, but to name a few deserve respect on this level, Jimmy ain't near that list for me.

sheesh. i wish you guys would stay on topic.
daz and scott played a nice gig. there were lots of punks in the audience who wouldn't normally see these guys play, and they loved it.
difficult music is always going to have a hard time pulling commercial audiences.

Look mate thanks very much but I don't need a lecture from you. If I took your advice I'd be like you. That's not meant as an insult, I just prefer to be me. I like to think freely and say what I think. I haven't vilified anybody here, except maybe you but you tend to give me the shits I confess. If you say I shouldn't bring up my BL gig simply because it might exacerbate the Sydney-Melbourne bullshit that can go on here (as it probably has) I have to say I don't give a toss about that, you stick to your rules and I'll stick to mine.
