I spent my lunch hour zipping out to buy the recent double CD reissue of Spirit's Spirit Of 76. First time I've heard it for more than 20 years and it sounds simply incredible. Randy California is one of the Great Cosmic Goofballs. Who are some others? Candidates: Neal Cassady Ken Kesey Oswald Owsley Sun Ra John Sangster Smacka Fitzgibbon Captain Beefheart Jimmy Giuffre Bob Dylan Arthur Brown Roky Erickson Bobby Charles Doug Sahm Brian Wilson (even if I do think the Beach Boys suck!) Luke Rhineheart The Goons Professor Longhair Ernie K-Doe Allan Browne Bugs Bunny Hell - I can't think of any chicks!

I was thinking more of Cosmic Goofballs - you know, jokers/pranksters/whatever ...
Janis Joplin? Maybe. But as a fan of Betty Clarke, Betty Everette, Laura Lee, Irma Thomas et al, my problem with her has always been: She can't sing to save herself. Simply horrible.
Princess Die? Ha ha.
How about Josephine Baker and Bessie Smith? Yup.
Isadora Duncan? Don't know much about her.

You think those women aren't funny?

It's not about funny. Or not toally, anyway.
But to answer your question:
Princes Dianna and Mother Theresa funny? Nup. Dunno about most of the others. I guess Janis was funny as hell when it came to singing.

Why do you think Janis Joplin was funny?

Why do you think Janis Joplin was funny? Not funny as in funny ha ha. Funny as in so excruciating-it's-funny. As in shut the f... up and stop that screeching. Simply terrible. Bllody hell I'm having a torrid time getting back in the work groove. Yesterday I had an argument about a standards album put out Robert Downey Jr, that coke-head loser/actor. A colleague coerced me into listening to it. When I voiced my opinion ("This is shit for people who prefer Robbie Williams to Frank Sinatra"), he told me I should broaden my musical tatstes. Sheesh! I didn't want to hear the bloody piece of crap in the first place. Then this morning, another colleague asked me to name some of the better songs of Johnny Farnham. Ha ha. When I proceeded to give my honest opinions - "He has no soul; he's Australia's answer to Michael Bolton; he makes my skin crawl; it's just pure, perfect noise that says nothing" - thankfully another colleague backed me up with an even more stridently anti-Farnham diatribe. It was a Very Funny Office Moment. Popular isn't always good. Good isn't always popular. Seems obvious to me.

Careful Kenny, I hear your Dear Leader Rupert isn't too keen on discussion and independent views ;D ...oh and it seems unfair to bag someone for being a cokehead on a jazz forum mind you any discussion of Farnham is bound to bring up some impressive bile. I don't think it's his music that irritates me so much as the lame macho posturing onstage like some beery punter who has accidentally made his way onstage at a Metallica gig...

Two sides of the same coin, but you've nailed it. IMHO (I'd like to think that goes without saying, but you never know).

I think John Farnham is a really excellent singer. Vocally he has great range, power and control. I even like some of his material, "The Voice" I love, terrific anthemic piece with a great message.
I don't know about his onstage antics, I've never been to one of his concerts, I have him on CD.
I am serious by the way!

Yes, I know! Mark, you're a freaking dag. You're also completely freaking wrong. IMHO. Great range, power, control? I concur. But so what if the result is vapid? Sounds like someone singing the praises of Wynton!

I think Wynton's fantastic :-)
I don't think "The Voice" is vapid, I think it's a great song. Actually that whole album (Whispering Jack) is inspiring, great songs, great voice, great production.
I like what I like, I'm happy to be a dag (by way of partial mitigation, I offer that the last person I raved about here was Danilo Perez), and certainly don't mind you calling me one, because you're one of my favourite cats.

I think Wynton's fantastic :-) I know that. Or, more accurately, I know you think that!
