Yep a truly beautiful day... fuck a lot of good music happened. Jamie O. was searing like I've never heard. Hoodangers... sublime. Michelle Nicolle, Mags and Ronny, for those who've been tuning into the vocalist argument on the Nat Jazz Awards thread, showed how it can be done... two instrumentalists and a vocalist interacting, improvising, getting deep into the words, taking the music to unexpected places... that's the shit. Kenny, bummer you weren't there.

That was an extraordinary day for Melbourne in terms of artistic events, to beat all others. Such a fabulous collection of talent in one room. So well run too.
Jamie was sensational, I have never heard him play so well, I agree with Fringe Dweller on all the points raised. Adam was cool, Garcon D'Astro was cool too. A great great great day for Melbourne and people who love improvised music.
Half Bent deserve one thousand trillion gold stars.

Thanks Vicki and your contribution was integral to the success off the day. Worth pointing out though that it wasn't just Half Bent. There were folk on the committee from four independent organisations run by musicians: Lebowskis, La Mama Musica, Make it Up Club and Half Bent and the work load was spread pretty evenly. And the fringe festival runs until the 20th... there's heaps of good music, not least tonight at 303 featuring the in-astonishing-form Jamie Oehlers. www.melbournejazzfringe.com for more gig details.

It was a great day, for me. I was there in disguise collecting the list of people who sinned against my umbrella. No freebies for you!
Next year we will make the half a dozen of you who we sign for umbrella to sign in blood that they will not work within the city called Melbourne not before, during or just after our umbrella opens. We are now wearing the crown and we are taking all the glory. We have won. You must all pay respect, worship respectfully each day and stay silent unless given permission to speak. You must remember that we are helping you. You will all benefit form our business in five - 10 years time. But for now shut up.
I heard someone perform Inchworm, if this was aimed at me then you are correct madame, we do have a business class mind and I will probably go far. But not far away.
NO freebies for YOU!

Bare Al :oSurely someone is joking!!!!! If not, glad you came down mate. Hope you paid full price to get in, and I'd like to thank your wonderful staff for the free tickets to Wayne Shorters gig on Saturday night. Which was absolutely incredible. I must say, you could have picked almost any member of the audience that night to put on a better quality support set than the imported one. Also, I must congratulate you on your ability to pressure the local press in to only reporting positive aspects of Umbria Jazz. Thats some power you think you weild!! By the way, the traditional Australian response to "Hi" is "Hi". Or at least a slight acknowledgment by slightly tipping your head forward and raising the corners of your mouth Smile's are free my friend. Try one, you'll feel better straight away I promise. Keep practising and hopefully next time we meet you can show me how you've progressed. Yes, the vibe at Big Arse Sunday was fantastic. The small ammount of time I got to spend in the sun round the BBQ, listening to great local music was fantastic. Congratulations to everyone involved for being bigger (in spirit at least) than the other event. Now that life is back to normal in Melbourne lets keep up the support for local music. Beware of false idols. El Bazza, while basking in your own omnipotent self-serving, God-complex glory, try not to forget that Jesus got crucified. You say you've won, but we were never playing your game. Maybe if you work up a few more smile credits we'll tell you how to play ours. Peace.

Je t'aime L'ozzjazzforum. Ces't une malicieux extreme! You naughty boys! Funny thing that, about greetings. I find myself meeting the same people for the first time on many occassions in the world of the Arts. I'm hardly an invisible gal either.

Did anyone else witness the grusome sight of Carlo sitting up on stage on the piano stool on saturday night during the young Italian sax player's set. It was a scream, big glass of red in one hand (constantly topped up by the ever attentive Bare Al), Carlo nodded approval when things got louder, grunted and groaned when they got even louder, waved his finger at the drummer, and occasional rose off the stool when the boy played a fast lick. Man that guy knows his shit.
