oh and a couple more - Archie Shepp playing standards (it always suprises me that he can play within the tradition so beautifully, yet is still always pegged as a 'noise' player)
an Art Tatum cheapie - i've never had any tatum on CD before, and he's still blowing my mind.

hey kenny- nice to have you back. who is this stefon harris? Young NY-based vibraphonist. His last one, Grand Unification Theory I think it was called, I found to be pompous and pretentious. BlackActionFigure is the goods - with Tarus Mateen , Eric Harland, Steve Turre, Gary Thomas, Greg Osby, Jason Moran and the girls from Saddle Club.

Those saddle club gals can really swing, but its their free improvisation and spontaneous composition that socks it to me everytime. Wayne Shorter, eat my shorts man! Saddle Club rocks.

My pal Roger and his wife Deb and No.2 son Issaac and No.1 daughter Hannah actually attended and enjoyed more festival gigs than I. Well done! I love it that have permanently rendered a good portion of their collective record collection unlistenable with that nasty subversive jazz stuff.
Anyway, I mention Rodge coz he's just returned my nifty 4CD Complete John Coltrane Village Vanguard set that he's had on loan for about a year.
Yeeehah - I'm gonna be playing it loud. Footiscray will be rocking tonite, I tell you.

Went to the Tent at 6.15 am this morning, it was cold, heard Ronny Ferella and Marc Beansalad on piano with trumpet guy on chair. Very odd hearing improvised music at that early hour. But an experience you had to have. I left at 7.30am to come to the desk. Yawn. Online listening Carly Bruce: LOVE Jonathan Zwarz's arrangement of Gone with the Wind, oooh la la, sexy! Circleworks : Colin Hopkins, Tony Floyd and Belinda Moody love that CD it is just gorgeous. and tonight I am going to listen LIVE to the new ISH ISH! Hooray for me and then Blowfish with Alison Wedding. far out, life is good good good! I love Melbourne in the Springtime, I love Melbourne in the Fall, I love Melbourne in the winter when it sizzles I love Melbourne in the summer when it drizzles I love Melbourne every moment, every moment of the year. I love Melbourne, why oh why, do I love Melbourne because it, is, all, here.

TRIO - reasonably new ECM release from Tomasz Stanko's backing band. Grachun Moncur III mosaic box set 3CD's some rare blue note stuff from Jackie McLean and trombonist Moncur. Also a recent release from the not so well known trombonist with an 8 piece band on Exploration. Sydney band Mosaic on Jazzgroove, also on Jazzgroove the Gerard masters Trio - Island Life 'beautiful stuff' Cameron Undy in fine form. David Murray and the Gwo-Ka masters. - Justin Time label. Gwo- ka masters are traditional drummers and voice based carnival music from Guardalupe with tenor sax funk. Murray releases so many albums this one slipped past me on its release. Milton Nascimento - Courage Nancy Wilson/ Cannonball Adderley Alister Spence trio Ben Webster with the Art Tatum trio - also enjoy Buddy DeFranco with the Art tatum trio Big Wheel, Jim Conways great band with Don Hopkins Kenny Dorham with Cannonball Adderley, lovely swinging set from 1959 Paul Desmond live in Toronto, 1975, old, old fave.

love that Cannon/Nancy Wilson record, it's a corker. Haven't heard Alistair Spence's trio yet, but I'm keen... Bill Laswell - Hear No Evil (over and over again!) . I'm not a huge fan of Zakir Hussain, who plays a lot on this record, but by christ I'm coming around... King Sunny Ade best of - spacey Nigerian guitar whiz

Van Morrison - Magic Time. Ahhh - the yearly, inevitably disappointing ritual of a new Van.
Tolvan Big Band
Joshua Redman Quartet - Passage Of Time
SFJazz Collective. Promo of new release on Nonesuch featuring Joshua Redman, Bobby Hutcherson, Nicholas Payton, Miguel Zenon, Josh Roseman, Renee Rosnes, Robert Hurst, Brian Blade. Pretty much straightahead - which, on a major label, is in itself rather startling in this day and age.
