SFJazz Collective - Holy cow this is hot.
Ornette Coleman - Beauty Is A Rare Steak.
Van Morrison - It's Too Late To Stop Now. Just a reminder of greatness in light of his latest pathetic outing.
Scott Tinkler Quartet - Live. Album of the year ...
Maria Schneider - Concert In The Garden. Sounding betterer and betterer.
Various arists - Valley Girl soundtrack. Thinking of power pop, I splurged on this. Actually, a lot of it is naff '80s stuff, but there's three tracks by the Plimsoulls and one perfect pop masterpiece by Modern English, a group with which I am happily completely ignorant except for this one tune - I Melt For You. A classic. Valley Girl, BTW, is an ace move - an update on the Romeo-Juliet thing with Nic Cage (his first starring role, I believe) and the thoroughly scrumptious Deborah Foreman.

The Jim Knapp Orchestra - Secular Breathing Chris Walden - Home Of My Heart
I bought these two on the recommendation of Phil Kelly, whose own big band album I have been enjoying on the same label - Origin.
The first is fantastic - 13-piece outfit, top-class material with plenty of diversity, great playing. Like Phil's outfit, it's a north-west aggregation, with Ingrid Jensen and Jon Wikan. I think maybe Seattle and environs are a little like Melbourne and/or Sydney - activity not as thick on the ground like NY, but high quality nevertheless. This, in feel at least, is a little like the BL BB, Mike Nock's bigger ensembles or the stuff I heard Aaron Choulai do during the festival.
The second is towards the brasher, bombastic end of the big band stuff I can handle. Very slick and LA/Hollywood, but still some goodies - such as Cherokee and Stolen Moments and a three-part Film Noir suite and even Star Wars.

My post got placed a little out of order so I can see the confusion. I was repying to the fake IG that was on about Roy Hargrove on the previous page. Fucking technology sucks.

Kenny, even I have to admit that the Tinkler album aint all that bad, maybe if he keeps up the practice he'll get a gig at the UJIM fest next year! Though he sure aint no 15yo anymore.

Neither is the 15 year old. He is 17 or 19 or an embryo depending on who you are talking to. His band are very strange too, I think kind of like a museum piece from the dusty archives of jazz history. (Was that Lurch on tenor?)
Not that there is anything wrong with that!

* Murphy's Law - Telling Tales. I've been playing this a lot, so am hoping to make the gig on Friday.
* Scott Tinkler Quartet - Live. Not bad for a pimply teenager.
*The Jim Knapp Orchestra - Secular Breathing. Fabulous. And I've just ordered another Phil Kelly recommendation from CDBaby - Vancouverite Jill Townsend.
