Do you think the guy who packs the sardines into the cans gets a discount if he wants to buy some? I dunno! Probably. Maybe not. Sardine's are a bit beyond the point though really, although Ferella is a master, I have to agree...and I don't even like the damn slimey little things
Do you think Tortoni knows how much good will even one free drink at the end of the night would buy him? It would be an excellent investment, and cost very little.
I agree with MrIsaacs, Coffee costs very little, as does soft drink,... as does a bottle of beer. The price of a slab of beer has not gone up very much in the last ten years. However, the discount price of a beer at Bennetts Lane on the night you are performing has gone up considerably about 4 times in the same period!!! Thats the real issue I think !!! There is a big difference between having a leisurely, enjoyable knock off drink at the end of a good gig and creating art with alcohol sloshing around in your brain cells. However, its nice to be able to have a couple of drinks and a conversation afterwards with the band and punters. Its great that Bennetts don't kick everyone out as soon as the music finishes like some places do. I usually leave pretty quickly though as I'd normally rather spend my money somewhere else. It just seems to last longer.

the problem here is not so much about the ins and outs of the way in which bennetts conducts its business, more so it is a severe LACK of competing venues around town offering performance opportunities for new, innovative music.
yes there new venues/gigs cropping up, BUT half bent is struggling to find a conisistent venue, thus is out of action; 303 is far away for many; lebowskis offers a particular atmosphere that doesnt suit all etc etc...
there needs to be a consolidated club opened up, with a good space (not like dizzys) good sound and a comprehnsive line-up of gigs which will attract punters..there has not been such viable competition for a very long time...
without competing venues, unfortunately (unless the jazzbos mobilise and revolt) bennetts can do what they want...simple.

www.pakin.org/complaint ... check it out, it's a joke, I don't actually give a rat's what bennett's does or doesn't do. Mind you, I hope everyone has noticed that the door charges are higher this year, and that door deal groups and weekend groups are being paid accordingly... please be vigilant.

Hey Weir,
I had fresh sardines yesterday, lightly dusted in flour and pan fried in a little ollive oil, served with lemon wedges, a fresh salad and some excellent bread.
Then I went to see a new film: A Good Woman and I was reminded what a genius Oscar Wilde was. They even featured sardines in the movie. Fresh too. So there although I love your picture it made me laugh out loud.
Belinda, you really ought to try some. Yummers!

i wouldnt say that all the singers at bennetts lane are necessarily 'hacks' at all...
true there can be a heavy cheese factor present, but i've been really impressed by the likes of some of the younger singers, like sophie bruce and gian slater...in fact i was pretty blown away by their no-jazz standard, orginal repertoire...
be careful about casting destructive aspersions..

what cheese factory, the only cheese I've seen at BL is on the platter.
Most of the vocal musicians at Bennets are very strong even without their vocal chords. They usually are bandleaders, arrangers and play at least one other iinstrument. There are one or two that cater to the mainstream big time, but none of them are total crap. Although I wouldn't but all their CDS, but I would say the same of some of the other musicians who pay at bennetts some are great, some play music which is not to my taste and some play mainstream. A few people play music to slit your throat to, but that is just my opinion! And I am not naming them.

Or so the band doesn't have to look at the audience! Or deal with the ones that "wanna sing a song with you's". But fortunately Bennetts does do a good job of keeping that kind of clientelle away. There! I said something nice. Aaaah, it DOES feel better!
