well speaking of cheese singers...
its a real shame that the younger talented singers mentioned who are actually engaged with and innovating jazz and are continually missing out on festival gigs to names such as kate ceberano, who argubaly doesnt even play jazz!!!!
oz is in a crisis

Look at who plays at the jazz clubs - mostly youn musicians!

Benetts doesn't hire Australian women singers over 40. Bit like Hollywood really. And people think feminists don't have a point anymore? Give me a brea!k
O/seas artists don't count. Ruby has got gigs there because Michelle Nicolle booked her as part of her band. You are right that the bias is towards younger musicians, maybe cos they work cheap? But there are many younger-middle aged musicians still playing at Bennetts, Chindamo, Grabowsky, Andrew Gander, Howard Cairns, Ben Robertson, Paul Williamson, Peter Jones, Allan Browne, for a start.

what is my definition of jazz??
a steady recapitulation of past styles/repertoire is enacted by JAZZ STYLISTS - kate ceberano is one of these, as is nichaud fitzgibbon, she admits to this.
a resynthesis of the past with a focus on creating new, contemporary original music (with, in many cases, a nod to improvisation) is what being a JAZZ MUSICIAN/SINGER is....
all im saying is the latter category is what interests me and its important to support new art...
of much of the music being amde in this coutnry at the moment, artists/bands such as 12 Tone Diamonds, Andrea kellar Quartet, Murphy's Law, Gian Slater, Sophie Brous (for what I've seen of her), Ball/Magnusson/Beresovsky Assumptions etc are making some of the best, new dynamic work around at the moment...
would you disagree???

yowzers....
im not sure whether it's constrcutive to necessarily set-up a competition between the younuns and the older players for gigs...its a sad actuality but not all that nice to think about. it doesn't reflect the music being made, just a finite/limited performance base...
for me thus far I have found a lot of promoters and venue owners incredibly supportive. for festivals such as wang, gigs are sought after all over the country, no wonder some of the younger, lesser known players are missing out, its tough out there!
best not to winge but comprehensively work out new performance platforms..

Right cos working out new performance platforms is super easy . Can I just say congratulations to Gideon Brazil, Ronny Ferella, Steve Mags and Eugene Ball (and other helpers) who are tireless in their efforts to create 'new' performance platforms for more experienced (Ren Walters, David Tolley, Ted Vining) and young (Marc Hannaford, Tamara Murphy etc) acts. And they still manage to maintain their own careers. These guys put in hours and hours of work. Also like to mention that i enjoyed reading your jazz co-ordination r.i.p article mark, thanks for that one.

so does that mean No More Pop Stars masquerading as jazzers at Wangaratta? Is it time to celebrate and open that bottle of single malt? Doz that mean KennyWeir isn't performing at Wangaratta either cos he's got the flu and dont wanna go to Umbria either or is it Kate who is performing at Umbria with Elton John or is Elton performing with Kenny at Wang?
