For me (and not everybody), disscussions such as these turn nasty fast. People draw lines in the sand and ask other to do the same. Why? Maybe because everybody feels insecure about being sliced, diced, quatered and categorised. Jazz as a word is idiotic. As soon as it is mentioned people are at each others throats. Why not be happy creating music? Your music can be informed by any sort of other music. If the music is honest, I think it deserves to be heard. By who? Anybody. Whether the music is honest or not can only be determined by the musicians performing it. Noboby else really has the right to judge other people's music. If musicians try to fake honesty; soon all will know. Maybe not today, maybe not tommorrow. Might I ad that I make no claim in being a perfect listener of music. I, like every other imperfect human who listens to music, have opinions. I like to hear certain things in music. If I don't hear those things, mostly I don't enjoy the music. I will not, however, ever deem the music somebody else creates as unworthy of attention (unless intoxicated). Just a few thoughts.

Its interesting how women get called bitches so often these days so comfortably so much so that younger women use the term to describe themselevs and other women but the 'bitchiest' comments and acts seem to me, a female new to this place of thoughts in written form, to come from the men. Some of you guys (males from the IDs unless they are fakes) on this forum seem nasty in a kind of passive aggressive way often. Just your average , real world seeping, into jazz. Sad really. I was looking for some new inspiration and I just got depressed.
A lot of neagtive unhelpful egocentric crap here.
That said Ive found some very good stuff too from the men as well as the women. How do we know anyone is who they say they are anyway?
Time to jump off the bridge. Splash.

I do hope you can swim. I don't think that is true, about the bitching, I believe we have gender equity on this forum, not in numbers true, but certainly in negative vs positive comments. I am a real female by the way. Promise.

Well, hell, thanks a bunch for checking into one of my cyber hangouts and getting to know us all so well before pronouncing your verdict from on high. None more so than your effort. You're obviously an expert. Perhaps you should lighten up a bit.

You should read Death Sentence by Don Watson, it is brilliant, if you haven't already.
Here is a quote from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (from the book).
"Funding for legal aid is increasingly meeting less of the demand, but allocating additional funds on a one-off basis without a specific reason may be seen as an admission by the Government that funding is insufficient.

One of the things that I really value about this forum is the opportunity to discuss ideas with a real frankness sometimes lacking when everyone is trying to 'work the biz'. Perhaps this frankness comes across as nastiness - there is so little work/money to be got in this scene, and sometimes there is a perception that favouritism gets in the way of some people getting the opportunities they deserve.
If you want a more positive slant, try the 'what are you listening to' thread, where I've been introduced to some music that I otherwise may never have heard. (it's my favourite thread, even tho often its only me and kenny there!) it's a place where people who love music can share the music that they love
(there, that Hallmark sentiment should balance all of our bad bitchy karma!!!!!)

dear diary, i got a rejection email yesterday that has me so blue i truly wonder how smart a move it is to return to Australia. there are just so many opportunities in jazz - can be said with so many different melodies. :-

Don't let it get to you Belinda. With distance it won't mean anything. Steel is tempered in the furnace. We have to stay our course whatever. Rejection hurts, but usually there's another better door and passageway with your name on it.
