I'd like to get the advice of Melbourne musicians and punters etc
I'm launching my new CD at Bennetts Lane Sunday March 5. This is also a MJC gig which normally take place in the older room. Martin has been agreeable in the past to moving a CD launch for an interstate band to the bigger room. This is what we did for the Keeping the Standards launch in February 2004, at the request of my record company whose preference would be to do the upcoming launch in the new room too. On the other hand, I have this idea that the old room has a better sound but don't know how the pianos compare (Tim?). Also it's easier to get that packed-to-the-rafters feeling in the old room. I think I probably have the final call as the record company will go with it if I want the old room and I think Martin is OK with either. The record company just think the new room is more comfortable and with a more upmarket feel.
Any thoughts?

Smaller room is always my preference. As a regular punter I always find the sound better in there, but your last CD launch was pretty packed in the Jazzlab Mark, I seem to recall and there weren't problems with the sound that I remember.

I'd definitely recommend the big room. Comfort levels become dismal in the small room as it fills. I prefer the big room at all times. What time will you be starting, pal? ;D

Thanks Vicki and Kenny (now I'm stuffed, two contradictory recommendations from two key regulars!)
I'm assuming that the gig will start when the MJC gigs usually start. On the other hand, being a CD launch perhaps Martin and the venue will be amenable to a special request starting time. What time do Sunday night MJC gigs start? What time should I start if all parties are agreeable?

I prefer the small room, no contest, as listener and player. Can't be specific about the pianos because it's so long since I played either of them. Just try to make sure whichever one you're using has been tuned! (Seems like an obvious thing to say, but you know...)

Ben Winkleman's launch was around 8pm and it was packed........but you'd need to check with Megan....

Thanks nuts!
I'll wait for any more relevant input and then explore it with Martin.

Kenny - I do think a coupla gigs with early starting times around the place would be a great idea, and I'm in the planning process of one just for you, but Mark; I would highly reccomend you stick to the normal bennetts starting time because a) nobody in this town goes anywhere before 9pm god knows why. and b) people are easily confused by different starting times. especially considering bennetts starts at 9:30 on 340 odd days of the year. maybe I'm underestimating the public though...
and I reckon the big room feels heaps more concert vibe than the small. the sound differences are minimal and it's a better environment for the punters and you get your own dodgy dressing room.

hey mark, just noticed this thread. i think it's a numbers game. if you expect more than 40 people to turn up, better to choose the big room and let them have the option of a seat with the listen. i like the small room room though, for sound and atmosphere reasons. ( i think the pianos were purchased at the same time and are the same model from kawai ..have to ask a pianist for more specs on how they differ to play though)

Johnny, I'm sorry but that is not true! So many paying punters I know complain that Bennetts Gigs start too late especially on nights where you have to go to work the next day. 9.30 on a Sunday night is way, way too late for those of us with day jobs.
Especially Sunday: who wants to start the working week deprived of sleep?
I frequently go to events that start well before 9pm and so do lots of the other people who live in Melbourne so your claim that no one goes out before 9pm is not true.
If Bennetts make it clear that the gig starts earlier then I'm sure you'll only benefit Mark, by getting more paying punters in, not less.
