Yes, Jamie, as serious as a nun in a porno theatre. Looking forward to it not because I think something particularly wonderful will come out of him, but because I don't. Or at least, I want to see if he proves me wrong. It's this weird perverse pleasure I have, can't explain it, except to say that some of it may be attributed to jealousy of those who appear more talented than I.
I think Glen is right, in that a lot of prodigies become nutcases. I think Mark is right in that, so what, a lot of people become nutcases (paraphrasing, I know), and I think that Captain is even more right that it is likely that Francesco Cafiso, and many kids like him, will slide into obscurity.

Exactly!
Hmmm... Except that I would also be thrilled to see something good come out.

Nice on Shaggaz - mix it up with the Deutsch. Schadenfreude und denn spaeter, vielleicht schadenfroh?
More on topic - I have seen this happen quite often, especially where I come from (Hobart). Lots of guys start out with a lot of potential, and some would qualify for the term 'prodigy'.
Unfortunately, as is so often the case, nearly everyone slaps them on the back, tells them how great they are and so when it comes time to do some hard yards and actually learn something more than what they possess inately it all gets a bit too hard. Especially prevalent in a lot of Hobart private schools. Go the state schools!
Many then give up, which is a shame. Or some work their arses off and become even greater players and still slide into obscurity for whatever reason (I'm thinking of a particulary gifted concert pianist friend that has had it tough) - I suupose this is the fickle nature of the industry.
I guess my point is that (for me, anyway) it's not so much about prodigousness (is that even a word?) but about the blood, sweat and (yes, you guessed it) tears that go into it. Speaking of, I should shut my cakehole and go do some work, especially since there is no way I was ever considered a prodigy!

One of the reasons I'm fascinated by prodigies. I'm aching to see one fulfill their potential as an adult. I look forward to checking in on Francesco Cafiso in about 12 years. A bet you a MILLION bucks he'll still be playing with the Adams family reject band he brought with him and Jamie I don't believe for one second you couldn't tell how brilliant Cafiso is. I loved the spin on his age but, when he arrived he was 14, then 15, 16, 17 by the time he left Melbourne he was almost having a mid life crisis

Maybe he will become a great player in 10 or 20 years, but now? I'm not convinced...anyone remember Christopher Holliday?

A prodigy just means a person, especially a young one, with exceptional qualities or abilities. And exceptional just means unusually good. So I would say that Cafiso falls into that category, especially when he was younger.
I mean geez, if Charlotte Church is considered a prodigy...
