If the fact that he's so young is the most noteworthy thing about him, then this music is really in trouble.

Thanks Stevo - Make no mistake... The crowd at Cafisos gigs were there because the act was a young guy .15, 16, whatever, playing the saxophone - with some command of the instrument and the ability to play the right things on the changes. If it had been a guy in his 50,s -would it have drawn the crowd?People love freak shows... genius? prodigy? two different things - The most interesting thing about most prodigies( as Mim pointed out )- is what they become. Genius? I sat through a few of his solos and not one act of Genius did I witness. In music, an act of genius must surely exist in the culmination of an artforms development and consequent innovation -at least thats what history tells us about "geniuses" Listening to a young guy shredding on the saxophone, ignoring the band( Joe Kohn, the guitarist was the most interesting part of that gig), churning out licks from a bygone era, however well executed, is something else. By the way, dont worry about Francescos ego - its just like his playing - doesnt really fit on a 15? year old.

This is the first time I've checked the board for a few days, and I've gotta agree with glen a bit. Very little said about an amazing gig and people here still debating the nature of prodigies. I know, I made a comment along these lines too, but that was one little comment on page 1.

1. I wasn't at Julian's gig and I apologise unreservedly to all concerned. 2. Simon Barker is an astonishing drummer and without question one of the best we have. 'We' here refers to the human race. 3. Francesco Cafiso is just boring. The idea of him is boring and his playing makes me want to shake certain festival heavies until their hair falls out.

Of course not everyone could be at Julian's gig. My point was, like glen's, that what may be considered a fairly trivial matter has got four pages of discussion, while that gig has only prompted a half dozen or so posts in 4 days. The kid can play the heck out of the drums, now lets see if he can develop his own voice, like Simon, or any number of other great drummers in Australia (ie Hamish, Ronny, Ken to name but a few). I think that's the real measure of his future development. And while I'm on the actual topic here, did other people have the same sync problems between the video and audio? I found it a touch off-putting seeing him hit things and having the sound a moment or two displaced.

Yes alimcg I had the same problem. However, I was more concerned with how the bass kept on walking whilst the bass player put his hands in his pockets. The sax seemed in sync at the start though. How bizarre...
(I'm talking about the first video with the sax, bass and drums where they're busking or something)

this thread aint about no Melbourne gig -- it`s about prodigies and little twerps in silly hats playin` their ill-formed butts off...
If you want to talk about blah blahs gig, then make another thread...
I am enjoying freaky little prodigies.

I've got nothing wrong with prodigies, or peoples enjoyment of them. I just thought it was strange, considering how often posters here bemoan the lack of positive comments, or thoughtful criticism, that so little was posted about a gig that I know a lot of board members were at, while in the meantime 3 more pages had been written on this thread. Sure, we don't want pages of people agreeing saying "yeah, great gig" but how about a little something eh?

ladylex - alright if I must demonstrate: Simon Barker Simon Baker ;D P.S. If the word prodigy is gets thrown around carelessly, then I think so does the word nazi...lol That you would even know of such a person LOL I know nothing about this Simon Baker - but you do? ahuh. Nice information you have storing in your brain cells. LOL I have met Simon a few times thank you. I will bring this up to him next time I see him. pfft to the supposed over usage of nazi, prodigy and genius. If the glove fits, wear it LOL

Sure, we don't want pages of people agreeing saying "yeah, great gig" but how about a little something eh? So start a new thread! This thread is for freaks of nature -- small beings that are born with some unnatural skill or prodigous ability, who, lashed and pimped out by their parents climax at a heinously young age before burning out. They then release new-age electronica until the age of 40, when, after the death of said pimp-parent, they discover their own inner well of talent, plundered and pillaged, but still rich with creative promise. Here's another one for you child prodigy fans out there www.ifilm.com/ifilmdetail/2669012
