You kids -- I leave you alone for about 5 seconds and look what happens... DEGENERATION, that's what. The kid seems fairly chilled and happy, his voice is squeakier than scrote's and he has to wear thay hat every time he plays, but compared with other Japanese kids his age, he's living it up large, playin' in jazz bars and not having to go to cram school every night. I love that his Dad is pimpin' him out. you can check him out on www.taiga-jazz.com/As for child prodigies, and drummers at that, what about Tony Royster Jnr. He's turned out alright, I guess... You can see him on this link www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoyBJ9GFDOUWhat's with the drummers Kimba -- I guess I am missing dangerous dan THAT MUCH

You must have very high standards for prodigys Jamie! For his age, playing what he was playing, he ticked all the prodigal boxes for me. Chris Holliday, Antonio Hart, Javon Jackson - you could go on forever with young black horn players who did one major label release then vanished.

I didn't hear Cafiso last year. If he has anything to worry about It'd be his ego getting in the way of exposure to different influences. He may not have one yet, but guaranteed he will before too long.
Judging by the times I've seen Keith Jarrett play I'd argue he's a bitter old man Mark! Doesn't get in the way of his playing on albums thank god.

cafiso wiped the floor with aournd 80 per cent of the gigging jazz saxophonists in Melbourne in terms of musical comprehension Jamie. You KNOW it is true but can you handle the truth? lol but still serious

Oh you're hilarious Glen....I just personally think the terms prodigy and genius get flung about way to easily these days. Mozart was a prodigy, Einstein was a genius - these are the kind of people I'm comparing him to.
He will definitely keep getting better if he can get other festivals to give him 2 weeks straight of gigs though ;-0

ladylex - alright if I must demonstrate: Simon Barker Simon Baker ;D Sorry, I couldn't resist. E Street! What a classy show. But atleast he moved on to the guardian. She moved on to... Australia's Funniest Home Videos.... P.S. If the word prodigy is gets thrown around carelessly, then I think so does the word nazi...

Sure, we shouldn't throw these terms about willy nilly - but for a 17 year old to be playing in time, with a groove, decent sound, with a wide comprehension of a certain style of alto playing, and plenty of technique, is pretty bloody podigal.
