I'd place my bets on a city a little further north than Sydney...

"His music, at once so free and elusive, is rooted in human experience. It is, to quote Ezra Pound ‘the colour of stars’ but very much of our world."
Right, so Ornette's music is white. Now I think I've heard it all.

Yes it's true : Ornette is heading to Brisbane to play on Mark Sholtez' next album.

I'd place my bets on a city a little further north than Sydney... I've followed this up with a few emails to friends in Sydney who may know something. Ornette Coleman was definitely under consideration by the Sydney Festival but whether they have successfully signed him for 2007 no-one could tell me. Their program is not released until end of October so it's not on their website. Other jazz names that were mentioned as possibly under consideration were Brad Meldhau, McCoy Tyner and EST. After doing nothing interesting jazzwise in the late 1990s Sydney Fest. has brought out some very good artists over the last few years such as Mingus Big Band, Maria Schneider, Branford, Ahmad Jamal and Dianne Reeves (a safe bet) Ornette is and always has been an expensive act so it will have to be a big festival that does it. I can't see something like Byron Bay risking it though perhaps Brisbane might. Since major festival directors talk to each other perhaps Sydney pulled out because another festival was further down the track with it. Or maybe decided Ornette is too expensive for the potential audience, and as they are the least well funded of the major festivals, simply pulled out. Or maybe they'll surprise us all.

FWIW, the year Branford came here (2001), the Sydney Festival had worked very hard to bring Ornette ; the plan was that he would play Sydney, then the Melbourne Int Jazz Fest. Just when it seemed everything was agreed on & contracts were being drawn up, Ornette's manager upped the fee, to the point where it was no longer workable. So if anyone (in Sydney or Brisbane) is trying to book Ornette, I hope they have better luck this time around !

I was told some time ago that there was another attempt to bring Ornette to Australia in the 80s which also hit the rocks. Was it over money? Cecil Taylor had a manager who upped his price without consulting him and lost him a lot of gigs. Some/many managers seem like total fuckwits. At least some festivals like Sydney and Perth, these days are bringing in major jazz artists. Who has Brisbane brought in recently? Melbourne and Adelaide have been pretty slack I think.
