Thank god for people like Albert. He did a great job with the Umbria in Melbourne Festival and now he's doing this. I'm thankful that someone has the energy to create such an opportunity for us here in Melbourne to see some truly world class jazz. Thumbs up for Albert I say. hey! are you saying that we don't have "world class" jazz here already? see you in the carpark punk!

Hi pettman. I would be interested to hear why you thought he did a great job with Umbria. P.S. AJ already back behind his desk? Hope you enjoyed your time at Mentone's finest cafe

Yo pettman, i think you may be a little misguided... it's ok mate. You're new. You will soon learn what's cool and who's not.
Sorry, but I don't think Albare has energy... he's got money. If I had money, I'd do something far greater than what the Melbourne Jazz International Crown Festival is going to do. Unfuckenforgettable in fact. Revofuckenlutionary!!
The program is exciting for us because we don't get to see much U.S jazz here. But really, it's VERY standard I think. Oh, and they are also bringing out Lieb and Pharoah who have both been here already in the past 2-3 years... now that's a bit boring isn't it. Not to mention that Chick & Gary were here 5 years ago or so and Herbie came with Wayne 8 years ago ish... BORING. There are so many amazing artists that they prob don't know of and they aren't bringing, it's sickening.
I don't know what gigs you are going to, but I think you're going to the wrong ones. Try Jamie Oehlers, Paul Grabowsky, Scott Tinkler, Stephen Magnusson, Julien Wilson, Adrian Sherriff, Ren Walters, Michelle Nicolle... the list goes on. There are a huge amount of killer Syd people too. Go to Bennetts on Sunday night - Triosk will knock your sox off.

Sure, yeah, it's great to see all these amazing o/s acts. That's part of the reason musicians from Australia travel. We really are in the middle of nowhere - bugger all gets out to Oz.
However, Australia has some fantastic musicians that are world class.
I feel a lot more time, effort and money could be far better spent promoting and supporting home-grown talent instead of throwing countless thousands at a few imports every year. I saw Herbie in Cologne not long ago. There were snatches of brilliance when you could hear Herbie play solo, but the band was lame. I'd gladly go and see a Herbie solo gig, but I'd much rather listen to Jules' Trio or Tinkler's Quartet or Andrea Keller's band or Geoff Hughes or Paul Williamson's Hammond Combo than Chick Corea.
...and $109-$129 a ticket? Do you get a fucking hotel room as well?

GB is right in the selection is cash-rich predictable. (GB would be great in that role as Artistic Director with those funds.... can u imagine? ) . As it stands I would rather go hear those gigs with Bodgey (whoever you are) at 303 or wherever than Hamer Hall or worse the vile Crown of thorns bleuch................ the thought makes me wanna lose my lunch

I wouldn't mind $109-$129 a ticket if it were in a smaller, more intimate venue with good sound. A friend of mine has an old barn out in the country, maybe the festival would like to hire it? I'm sure the hire would be cheaper than Hamer Hall...

MAN! All you guys can do is complain about what great musos are coming. These guys are world class and are inovators in jazz history. I mean jules, scott, paul, andrea etc are all good, but none of them have contributed to jazz like Herbie, Chick, Pharoah etc. I mean, COME ONE!
If you guys are so down on it all just shut your mouths and leave.....I can't wait to see the best jazz in the world.

We aren't complaining about these people coming to town. well I'm not, anyway... they are very welcome. we are just imaginging a better world with more imagination where artistic directors get that kind of money to BE artistic . and we're rightfully cursing the dreaded Hamer and Crown venues. AND if you think that you cant see some of the best jazz in the world in your home town played by your equally gifted countrymen you got agua de cocoa o sua cabesa. herbie chick and Pharoa are twice as old as Sott Andrea and Jules etc so comparing the size of contribution to the art form doesnt cut it for me. BUT Hope you enjoy all the gigs and hope you get good sound and dont have to max out your plastic to go. Hey if they were playing Bennetts or somewhere small I'd pay to see em again... maybe. but not if Phil Slater and Simon Barker were at the 303 the same night

Sorry, mate, that you don't like the premier performance venues in Australia. No smoking, no talking, comfortable seats, can't see anything wrong with that. Sure its expensive but you pay for quality dear man, and those guys are quality in a quality venue. It would seem that there are quibbles about the sound there, well I've been to numerous performances there of varying musical styles and with properly selected seating have enjoyed a very top notch sound, so I will be supporting these great concerts. I'm sure many here spend $100 plus on much less rewarding consumables! Re Alberts performance with the Umbria Jazz in Melbourne Festival, I'd like to know what you thought was lacking?? Plenty of good music in great venues. I heard tell that some complained about the local content, but this is our chance to see Jazz from other parts of the Globe. We can see the locals play at Bennetts and other venues each day of the week. Besides, there was quite a few local bands that were on at the Festival, some were even quite good.

Yeah, maybe WE can see locals any time. It's also about promoting local musicians to a non-local audience (people do come to Melbourne for a festival like that, I used to be one of them) and to people who might only go see jazz during a big jazz festival.
