Had the pleasure of playing with Mr Barker in Perth this week. Yes, I've played with him for years and yes, he's always been good, even great. But Simon has entered a new level of excellence it's frightening. His love of Korean music is making a heavy push on his playing, he is more powerful and expressive than ever before and his phrasing and structure is nothing short of astonishing.
Don't know why I'm saying all this, he was just so good you all deserve to know. Support his Kimnara label, there's great music available there, and if you get a chance to see him, get close.

The first thing that struck me when I first heard Simon was sound. Broad, deep, meaningful, individual. Simon also has the same effect my other favourite drummers have (insert your dodgy remark here IG, extra points for working the contents of these parentheses into said dodgy comment) - when I hear 'em I can't help but smile. Whether it's Billy Higgins, Herlin Riley, Sam Woodyard, Ed Blackwell, Bernard Purdie - whoever - those guys play so beautifully you can't help but feel good.

I like his chesty hair oh yeh.. his banging skills are brilliant. So emotive. He makes his drums sound like they have melodic qualities
