Happy 30th Birthday Jazztrack! Congratulations to all who have contributed to Jazztrack’s success over the past 30 years. The performance at Bennett’s was a blast. A great lineup and diversity of style. How wonderful are Australian jazz musicians: Geoff Hughes, Steve Magnusson, Eugene Ball, Andrea Keller, David Rex, Jules Wilson, Alan Browne, Tamara Murphy, Nick Heywood, Steve Grant (in no particular order). I agree with the wise man who suggested there should be concerts across the country for the rest of the year, broadcast live, showcasing more Australian jazz in celebration of 30 years of Jazztrack. There’s no problem with the budget for that, is there Mal? Here's to another 70 years at least. Jazztrack has brought so much Australian jazz to the world through recordings and now the net. If you missed today's show: www.abc.net.au/radio click on to Classic fm then Jazztrack and download.

Once I realized that everybody hated me, I stopped being paranoid.

Glen, I remember we had that discussion a number of months ago. I still maintain that it's because there's only so many "Yeah it was really good" replies people are gonna wanna read or make. How long can a conversation go on if nobody brings up any conflicting points?

I am glad that Jazztrack has made it to thirty, I am glad the concerts went well, I think Jazztrack plays a crucial role in our scene but I think the Jazztrack format badly needs an overhaul to take it beyond disc spinning. Mal Stanley made some changes after Jim McLeod's departure but more need to be made. But the format is tired and dull.
On the local front it needs to start introducing our musicians to the audience as people, to humanise them through short interviews or portraits on air. Many of the classical programmes do it. It may be a matter of resources and this is where the jazz community should lobby the ABC. After all we still haven't as much jazz air time as we did in 1990.

we wouldnt want jazztrack turned into another music show like on Radio national though..i think the format is ok as it is,,,,,,,,,, but u r right about lobbying,,,,,& not just the abc but all the big broadcatsers.......... the abc has dig jazz but foxtel is promoting its own digital AIR radio now that has everything,,,,,,,,,, with the exception of a space dedicated to jazz ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,so maybe we shoudl just give up now........but ..........soemone in the murdoch clan must like jazz..........they still own foxtel dont they?

I wouldn't mind hearing a short profile on an Australian jazz muso every week, or even just some weeks. I'm sure there are enough interesting guys around to make it feasible. I'm sure we could find a few years worth of guys to interview before I got a chance to rant!
How about a little spot each week for IG to have a rant, like Sam Kekovich on The Fat?

That would be awesome! Guts lays down the law every week. Or once a fortnight you could have a traditional player who likes to shoot their mouth off, and rant about how the improvised music scene is shit.

Jazztrack is fine with me. I don't want more talking, in fact when it comes to radio there are many presenters who might improve their programmes significantly with far less talking. Radio National is the place for opinion and debate on the arts and other matters, or if you want a sad laugh tune into commercial talkback and find out how well informed our fellow Australians aren't (and they vote too).
