Dear glen or valley, my point is that reviews don't make much difference at all to sales of Jazz in this country and Marksiks tirade on the lack of knowledge of these people was a gross generalization of all but Mr Jackson, whom I think Marksiks must have had a favorable review from. There seems to me to be a willingness to can reviewers for not talking about the music in an intellectual and informed way, yet no willingness to do it yourself here on an open forum. Excuse the term, but it is quite pissweak. I myself would love to read some of the informed opinions of you educated Jazz people but am finding it hard to find any here. The times that people do write in, like Frank, get a barrage of attack thrown at them so much so that they have to leave and withdraw their posts! Pissweak!!

To rise to the bait once more...
Firstly, I think just getting reviewed in a major newspaper in this country is a feat in itself, worthy of a few CD sales, or a few more bums on seats at gigs. Is it unreasonable to expect somebody who is paid for their opinions to at least have some sound knowledge and understanding backing up those opinions? We have some good reviewers (such as aj) who clearly do know what they're on about, but there are more than a few instances of reviewers demonstrating a lack of knowledge. Perhaps this is not just the reviewer's fault. Maybe we sometimes see non-jazz reviewers reviewing jazz, or even run-of-the-mill journos reviewing. In that case editors must take some responsibility.
Without re-reading this entire thread, I'd like to point out that the barrage of attack Frank received was from a rather small section of forum members. Most of us are interested in serious discourse, but a few members make it their business to get rather hoity-toity every time somebody has an opposing view. In fact, right now pettman, you are demostrating some very poor debating skills, and are guilty of the same problems you accuse Marksiks and co of.
Never end a sentence with a preposition.

What about a proposition? I have one of those.
Seriously though, your comments make sense, thank you.
It is getting increasingly less likely that there is a Jazz review (cd or gig) in any paper now days. I don't think even Adrian has a regular spot for reviews and he would seem to be the favored reviewer, here at least.
The idea of a preview or interview for a gig would be helpful I'm sure, but the only ones I see of those are for bigger budget things like Wangaratta, where maybe they have more influence in the press.
This is all a good reason to support PBS more. Oh, and things like the Jazz forum of course.

At least we still get a semi-regular spot in 48 Hours in The Age's A2 on a Saturday, often it does just plug the better known artists, but we do get some lesser-knowns featured too.

Jazz reviews ARE less regular these days than used to be the case. The Age runs a jazz review by Leon Gettler in the Green Guide every 2nd week at best, more often every 3 weeks. The Sunday Age will run a jazz cd review by Derek Leather very occasionally. Kenny Weir might review a jazz cd in the Sunday Herald Sun every 3 weeks or so. The Australian will include a jazz cd review in their Saturday liftout some weeks, not every week (usually John Mcbeath, sometimes Ashleigh Wilson). The SMH will have a review by John Clare or John Shand once a week ; not sure what day, but you will often find these on www.jazz.org.auIn the case of the Green Guide and Sunday Herald Sun, it used to be every week. Shand and Kevin Jones do jazz cd reviews for Limelight every month. Anyone know of any other regular reviews ? I used to do a weekly cd review for The Bulletin, but they dropped their cd review section about 2 months ago. I still do a jazz cd review section for Rhythms magazine. If I haven't given marksiks a good review some time in the past, I guess I have to now !

Oh, I realize now that aj is Adrian Jackson! Well what a honor it is to be on a forum with you. Thank you for your clear and precise input here Mr Jackson, it does help clarify the dire situation of reviews for jazz in Australia. You are obviously much respected here which is no mean feat! Keep up the great work and keep being a great inspiration and influence for young aspiring Australian Jazz Artists.

oooo, the real Adrian Jackson, oh christ.
I love ya work aj but that article where the idiot reviewer said that you were the most influention person on artists in the Aus scene was such shit. No disrespect, I doubt youd even think that for a sec. the thing these cunts say to sell an article is ridiculous.
