Apostrophes can also be used to indicate omission of letters. Seeing as muso's is short for musicians, I believe it's acccepable. I don't buy that at all. Where did the added "o" come from then? Your paradigm would produce mus'ns or something like that. Muso is a standard Australian colloquialism that renders a polysyllabic word disyllabic. It's not about omitting letters, it's about omitting whole syllables and then tacking on a vowel-like sound. Other examples: journalist/journo, compensation/compo, vegetable/veggie, barbeque/barbie. The technique involves using the first syllable and adding either "ie" or "o". Muso is the colloquial word. Musos is the plural. Muso's has to denote some kind of possessive function.

I hope you're being at least a little tongue-in-cheek with this reponse.

Toungue-in-cheek? Not really Mim. That would be like "I was only joking Mim when I made all that stuff up".
Since I am really terribly interested in language it's all meant "seriously" (as serious as a pleasant 5 minute diversion here on a busy day can be!). I love debating points of grammar with intelligent people such as yourself. I get really passionate about it.
But I certainly don't mean it in any kind of personal way. Please don't misread my tone. I'm just enjoying a bit of a debate. Don't mistake vigour for anything other than enthusiasm.

As for "acccepable", must have been a slip of the toungue.

Since you provide no context, I think this actually can work as you have it. I see it as simply a SIGN, a one-word declaration of ownership claiming that the place the word occupies belongs to a pedant.

Shand ought to resign if he feels so unenthusiastic about the music as his responses indicate. That would be the honest thing to do. Big Question: who would replace him if he did?

'why is there no John Coltrane or Miles Davis playing music at the moment?'
I hope the above question represents disingenuity on Mr Shand's behalf.
That a critic should appear to have such shallow familiarity with postmodern social theory is concerning.
Any chance of having him make an appearance here to discuss this issue further?
