Right now: Duke Ellington and John Coltrane
And a very rewarding evening at Malvern Town Hall last night for the Stonnington Jazz Festival. Despite the horrendous conditions for the journey, well worth the effort.

Ringing in my ears from last night the Carl Dewhust Trio with Cameron Undy and Evan Mannel (James Muller and I shared a table at the Sound Lounge). Excellent and fascinating. Later today the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra National Big Band Competition. I'll be in the audience but it's going out live on Jazztrack. I met some of the young contestants last night at the SL. One crossed the Tasman for it.

Went to Schlott in Berlin and saw Tony Buck play with some well known German free jazzers, was quite a good night. There was Bass clarinet ( Rudy Mahall) Trombone drms and piano. Thing was it was acoustic and the Bass Cl player was the loudest thing in the band, and not because the others were soft. He has a great sound and had obviously checked out Dolphy, great player. Tony sounded great too of course, he was in between a Necks tour and living on airplanes, still had time for a quiet drink though. I think I mentioned I saw Jim Black too, wow. Interesting though Steve Heather, another great Aus drummer living here, was hanging with me too. Jim said to us that he had heard our music (Aus CD's) on radio quite a bit lately and it was great to hear us "in the zone". Didn't think much of it at the time but Steve said later how it quite annoyed him, why does he think the 'zone' is NY? We had a good rave about that anyhow, the Jazz world is a much bigger place than one City!

Mahall is a monster. Guts, did you see Aki Takase's group? Mahall is in that too.
Have you checked out Andreas Schmidt? He was my teacher when I was living there - an incredible pianist and a very generous soul. He has the monday residency.
Saw Osby a couple of weeks ago here (Paris) at the Sunset with Matt Penman, Marc Copland and Bill Stewart. The rhythm section were amazing, but Osby didn't seem to want to relate. Still, his approach is intriguing - somehow it seems to come across better on the records. Copland and Stewart were tight as the proverbial - great left hands!
I believe the Tasman crosser for the composition comp is none other than Tassie's own Kelly Otaway! Go get 'em, Kel.
Am also listening to a bunch of obscure 1940's cast recordings of obscure standards to transcribe and then obscure on the band stand with the Captain and AliMcg soon. Very much looking forward to that.

yes that was one group, Aki. The duet shit she did with Rudy was really good.
I'll check out the Monday session tomorrow.
Agree about Osby, great ideas but for me he doesn't connect with the rhythm section either, except he does play 'in time'.

I believe the Tasman crosser for the composition comp is none other than Tassie's own Kelly Otaway! Go get 'em, Kel. There was a New Zealand guy who I was referring to who crossed the Tasman. Kelly crossed the Bass Strait, yes? I thought Kelly's piece was brilliant, in the tradition yet fresh and ingenious. Knocked me out. Though Sally is talented and I wish her well I didn't make it a secret that I thought the judges' choice was odd to say the least. Kelly was the clear winner to my mind and as I sensed it (through body language, audible responses etc) it seemed he was also to the collective mind of the Mothership and the audience. What did radio listeners think?

Guts - keen to hear what you think of the Monday session.
Isaacs - oops, yes, it's the strait. When are they gonna build a bridge over that sucker? Great to hear about Kel, I missed the comp but hopefully can stream it.
Have been listening to Sonny Rollins today too. Delightful. Such architecture, and by gee, by jingo, by crikey does it swing. But then, that's old news.
Can anyone give me a run down on Matthew Shipp's albums? Recommendations etc? It's about time I made some purchases. Ta.

I missed the comp but hopefully can stream it. I only heard some of it and was trying to stream the rest but the ABC site doesn't seem to be wanting to play ball.

I liked raf karlen's piece (but he's a mate so there may be some bias there...) - it seemed to use a strong melody as its central element more so than the other charts, but i really liked the new zealander's chart - very challenging and interesting orchestrally
was great to here Hobb's chart too

I've had a Ben Wolfe CD on in the car, called 'Murray's Cadillac'. Some nice writing for three horns, plus Ben's massive massive sound.
Also lots of Delta blues, Son House etc. and a compilation of early Cajun. Paul Kelly doing bluegrass, Another new release from the Zappa vault, and also just bought 'Crescent' and 'A Love Supreme' on vinyl and they sound really on the old 'turntable'.

Can't remember. Don't think so. Can I do one, AliMcG? Promise I won't write oboe or flute parts...

I sent him a lead sheet - but I though that was via you, Bodge???
Of course you can do one yourself, and you can write oboe and flute parts, but only if you can play them simultaneously yourself.
