Well, many are called - few are chosen.
Anyway Vicki, I have locks, it's just that I thought goatees and berets were for jaaaaazz musicians. Wasn't that what Jimbo said?

Yes but you don't have yukky, dirty, hippie, anarchist white boy trying to be black man type dread-locks, do you? Come on Tim, must try harder - get out the super glue and throw out the soap.
As we've gone off topic here I'll leave you with this evening's listening:
Rock gods from the 70s and 80s.

Eddie Costa Trio, over and over. House of Blue Lights because Mike Nock played it at the Stonnington gig and I loved it...
Gerry Mulligan.
And 'Always' - the CD with McGann, Grabowsky.
Plus ormus - the Showa 44 CD, which I just picked up and listened to again last week...a few times.
Just re-read A Fringe of Leaves. Enjoying White's eloquent reticence... Tim - must be something Patrick Whitey in the air.

Yes. It said: File between John Taylor and Bobo Stenson, which only works if your CDs are kept in reverse alphabetical order. Did everyone hear about Esbjörn Svensson? 44 - no good. www.allaboutjazz.com/php/news.php?id=19452

I'd file in between Les McCann and Denny Zeitlin.

If you tell a critic who you sound like, wouldn't you be doing all their work for them? Bloody freaking hell - humour is the only rational response to this farce. You won't be surprised to learn that this nonsense has been foisted upon us - just the same as the star ratings were a few years back. I feel this is especially stupid for Roger and the artists he is reviewing. The Australian jazz scene is made up of so many diverse, idiosyncratic personalities, that comparing them to a couple of overseas artists or some of their Australian counterparts seems a kind of lie, not particularly helpful and rather insulting. But it's comply or not do the reviews. From that perspective, I reckon it could be argued that by giving the artists some say in how they are portrayed, Roger IS doing his job. ************* BTW, in the years since Roger expanded his music bluesy/rootsy interests to embrace contemporary jazz, I have been mightily impressed by the sheer number of gigs, CD launches and festivals and so on he has made it to. And not just at Bennetts Lane - he's been to stuff all over the place. His reviewing efforts in the SHS have found him being more analytical about music for the first time, and then having to put it all into words, for the first time in his life. I know how hard he works to make every word count in our very short reviews. I'm biased - he's a good mate of mine - but I reckon he's doing a grand job, bringing a freshness and passion to his reviews that make his efforts as good as any going around at the moment. Certainly, I feel he makes some of the more famous, familiar so-called experts seem pretty lame and jaded by comparison. ************** PBS has spruiked its announcer training courses before, but I've never heard the station explicitly seek out potential jazz announcers, as it is doing at the present. I keep the whole station politics thing at arm's length, so I'm not quite sure what this is all about. But it strikes me as a fabulous opportunity for the musicians here to have a direct say in promoting their music. Sure, there's some work and diligence involved, but not nearly as much as playing an instrument or forging a career actually playing music. And I realise time constraints - what with practising, touring, gigs, family issues and so on to deal with - would make holding down a regular PBS show problematic for many. But I reckon there's probably scope for trying on some sort of collegiate approach, with a revolving cast of announcers fronting up depending on who's in town.

Relax - it's important to remember the prequel to this: the Scottish critic's reaction to Resurgence. It explains everything, and even shows that Mark's comment is a humorous one. The whole sub-thread was in a jocular vein.

I'm not up to speed about the Resurgence thingie, although Roger mentioned it to me. OK - just read that review. Blimey!

The whole sub-thread was in a jocular vein. Thanks Tim, spot on. Yep I'm now able to have a laugh about that Resurgence review as an extreme example of this business of a review having to map the CD at hand to something else. It just seemed like an opportune light-hearted comment for that part of the thread and wasn't aimed at Kenny and Roger's paper. Anyway it's certainly nice to have some background from Kenny and to see him around these parts again! You would have loved my osso buco Kenny.
