Well everyone, I'm turning 50 this week (on Sunday). As well as celebrating with my immediate family I'm having a party/jam for Sydney musical friends. This is what I wrote on the invite for what it's worth: I'm turning 50 and I'm really happy about it. Feels like starting out again and I'm hoping to do my best work for another 30-40 years if I am granted the health. I guess my other network I would like to celebrate with in some way is the OJF one and therefore I hereby declare this thread an invitation to PARTY!

Melbourne party on July 6? Bennetts will supply grog at vastly inflated prices. Perhaps a 'two for one' offer, where you pay for two, but you get one.

I'm trying to work out if I should learn to drink (albeit temporarily) over my 50th birthday season.
Any tips?
This is all terribly heretical for an Australian to say, but my problem is I've never quite worked out exactly what it is alcohol is supposed to do. It makes me feel silly, then sleepy, then later nauseous. The silly phase I can see has some merits. However I can't play music on it (unlike other substances I have experimented with). OK I could probably play a slow blues.
What do people recommend I do over the next week?

Drink till you fall over, then get up and drink more, when you couldn't possibly have any more don't be gay just keep going. Don't make the mistake of filling up on food, this will interrupt the flow. If you're not used to drinking large amounts then best to stick with spirits, beer can bloat someone with small stomach cavity, though the burping and farting is very popular with co-drinkers. Be careful of brown spirits, they are pretty all consuming, save them till last. Best to stick to Vodka and Gin, maybe some white Rums, all good. After the first big night start with a Bloody Mary for Breakfast, this will ease you into the day nicely. G + T in the Arvo, not too much wine with dinner, maybe only one bottle, and then a desert wine of course. Finish with a grappa as a digestive then you'll be ready for a big session again. Just like playing well Mark, this takes commitment focus and practice. By the end of the week you'll be rocking, quite broke, but ROCKING!!! If you find your form, keep it going till Wang and you'll be a hero.

Dear Iron, you have eloquently explained the method to reach said exalted goal and I thank you for that, but you haven't explained exactly what will be my reward. This is where I fall down (as it were). I need to know what I can expect to get out of it. It's my birthday and I want to have a good time. What will alcohol deliver me? "Rocking" sounds promising as a general description, but more details particular to the context at hand would help enormously.

It's not about YOU Mark, it's about what you give to others! Funny photos, dummy spits, inappropriate behavior, embarrassing comments, the list goes on, everyone will love it. Do it for us.

I always thought the idea of drinking was to meet girls? Bugger! Double Bugger!! I figured there had to be something wrong with my thinking but until now hadn't worked out what. I keep drinking, and I don't meet blokes... it's because when you drink, you meet girls?? How do I meet blokes? Should I stop drinking? (will buy you a drink on 6 July, Mark. Tea or fruit juice if you insist, but may spike it with Voddie if feeling naughty)

and then a desert wine of course I have been studying your instructions closely. I'm gobsmacked that they can grow grapes in the Gobi! Drinkers are so industrious.
