couple of often-overlooked classics there, in the Christlieb-Marsh set and The Thing To Do. Gee AJ - does that mean you think I'm a cool dude? Or do you STILL think I'm complete tosser, but one who just happens to (inadvertantly) like a couple of cool albums?

*Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey - Walking With Giants. Bloody hell - a jam band that cooks OK. Certainly better than the pretentious (IMHO) Bad Minus and their turgid reworkings of pop songs a la Jamie Whatsit. *Thelonious Monk - Monk 'Round The World. Yummy stuff - part of an ongoing series being co-released by Monk's family and the Hyena label. Good sound, too, and a DVD of three tunes from London's Marquee of all places.

Strewth, Kenny - can't come at the Bad Plus? that guy is one hell of a piano player...
this weeks favourites: Coltrane 'Crescent'
Griffith Park Collection - an old supergroup featuring Joe Henderson and Freddie Hubbard that I hadn't heard for a LONG time but cranked up the poor old turntable this week and this one sounds just fine even if the recording style is a little eighties thin and dry
Miles - the complete Jack Johnson sessions. Now while it's all very interesting to hear all the outtakes and everything, I have to say hearing all this just makes me more impressed at the gifts of Miles and Teo Macero to build and mix those great late sixties/early seventies studio albums, distilling and grabbing a track here, a track there. masterful, i'll go back and listen to the final releases with even more joy!

Maybe, probably, even certainly. Still don't like 'em. fair enough - I've had people trying to tell me for years that Keith Jarrett knows how to play the piano, but I'm yet to be convinced! (just as long as they don't make me listen to it....) This week's hits Duke Ellington 'Such Sweet Thunder' amazing Greek clarinet player Giorgas Mangaz Wanderlust Count Basie Original Decca Recordings

I've been listening to some Basie lately which I just love. His arrangements are the most sing-along-to I can think of, make you want to bop around the house - Divine. Also been checking out the Judy Garland Show on Ovation (sic). Seriously, sometimes there is some great stuff on there and Mel Torme did most of the arrangements with such a brilliant band. Terrible sets, but you can't have everything can you - that would be greedy!

yeah, I really enjoyed seeing a bit of the Nat King Cole show when SBS ran it a few years ago - some of it truly wonderful, some truly awful, but Nat always incredibly dignified and stylish
This week Barney McAll 'Release the day' - a really gorgeous record, perfect for a hot summer's day
Chris Potter 'Gratitude' - I found Potter quite unremarkable on his trip out here a few years ago, and I have to say this record has a similar feel for me. Very competent, but seemingly keen not to offend (and on that basis I find it a little offensive!)
Paul Grabowsky 'When Words Fail' - ergh - didn't like that one either, maybe I'm having a bad week, but some of it was pretty trite...

Meow meow meow How It Is - really slagging off Krall becuase Happy doesn't like Jarrett, that's a bit mean isn't it?
There is nothing wrong with Krall anyway - she's just very popular, but I admit not wildly exiciting. I'd rather people listen to her than some of the rubbish that is in the top 40 now.
I love Release the Day too, great recording. Oh yeah but I LOVE listening to Keith J too.

Furk - another 12-hour shift on a shit-boring Saturday. At least weisswurst with french mustard at Vic Market put me in something approaching a sunny mood, as will - no doubt - the following as the day unfolds in its majestic tedium:
Paul Williamson Quartet - Mutations. last year's best album. Yum. Yum. Yum. Teddy Edwards - Smooth Sailing Von Freeman - The Great Divide Larry Young - Of Love And Peace Duke Ellington - Blues In Orbit Mark Isaacs - The Entire Standards Songbook In 3754 Handy Volumes The Reformed Doors - Keerhist, As If The First Time Around Wasn't Bad Enough!

Can't speak on Jamie Cullum, I'm yet to hear any. Diana Krall is not on my playlist either. My problems with Jarrett go back many years - I have always found his playing (to my ears, and I know how alone I am in this) maudlin, over - romanticised and posturing. I haven't tried to listen to him again recently, perhaps its time I did. Last great piece of piano playing I heard - Chucho Valdez solo. His music carries the sort of passion, energy and sheer joy I have yet to hear in Jarrett. And for a little more perspective on where I am coming from, my favourite piano players include: Thelonious, Duke, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, Tatum, Teddy Wilson, Cecil Taylor... ps have to apologise for the remarks on Chris Potter the other day. I WAS having a bad day, and on an advised relisten, I'm getting much more out of it (especially the second half...)

well, everyone's entitled to their opinion.
my own view of jarrett is that he's like John McEnroe (for those who can remember when he played tennis, instead of talking about it) : an annoying little turd, but capable of sheer magic.
as for Chris Potter : I was rather more impressed with his playing when he was here in 99 (though I wasn't an unbiased observer). He had a great attitude, too.
Leaving that aside, I reckon he plays like a mo'fo on several Dave Holland albums, & on some of his own on Concord (eg Vertigo, Unspoken) ; but his Verve cds have been a real disappointment.
