Tim Stevens will talk about his soooper-doooper new CD and other entrancing matters on Monday night from about 8.30pm on The Pearls on Peebs.

Oehlers & Keevers - Grace (Jazzhead). Holy cow, Blatman, this is GOOD! Two masters at work. So much space, such a leisurely pace, with lots of silence (if you know what I mean). I love the way Sam utilises his Latin thing with so much subtlety and discretion; you hardly notice it, yet it's fundamental to the music. Hmmmmm ... tasty! Anyone see these guys at Wangaratta? How was it?
Tim Stevens Trio - Nine Open Questions Jackie McLean - Destination Gout! Art Pepper + Eleven Art Pepper - Smack Up Teddy dwards - Smooth Sailing Joe Henderson - Inner Urge Serge Chaloff - Blue Serge Freddie Hubbard - Breaking Point

Hey kenny
Can't say I share your enthusiasm for some of the paler exponents of west coast jazz (art pepper's an honorable exception !).............but your posts here have prompted me to dig out the vinyl of a couple of often-overlooked classics, in Blue Serge & Katanga. So thanks for that !
ps : what's the more ironic art pepper title ? Smack Up, or Straight Life ?

Yeh, I played Katanga a few weeks back, and have been lovin' Blue Serge, Smack Up and (even better) + Eleven today.
Based on the West Coast Jazz book, my next priorities are likely to be the five CDs of Terry Bibbs' Dream Band. Yummy!
Both funny titles - haven't read the book, and after the Chet Baker book I'm not sure I'm ready for another piece of junk (so to speak)
Have you heard the Sam/Jamie thingamajig?

Straight Life is a very cheerful read..............as I recall, it starts with Art saying how his mother wanted an abortion, & his life kinda went downhill from there.
Haven't heard the Jamie/Sam cd yet, I think Andrew Walker is scared I'll give it a good review & guarantee minimum sales.

Bit of a coltrane fest lately 'European Tour' 'Afro Blue Impression' 'Lush Life' some of this I haven't heard for ages, beautiful playing
also Duke Ellington Far East Suite - lush! Thelonious - 'the composer' Bob Marley - compilation and Owen McKern's great Sunday afternoon show on RRR, always a treat.
oh yeah, Straight Life that's a trip - I love the bits where he's holding up banks and chemists shops!

if you liked that, you should check out Gary Giddins' 'Riding On A Blue Note' for the chapter on Red Rodney.....tells how at one stage he fed his habit by impersonating a general & boosting payrolls from the US Army !

wow it must be fifteen years since I read that one, I've forgotten all about it - I'll have to go back and check it out.
This week's favourite: flute maestro Robert Dick's ADD trio - something else!
also heard Savannah Blount this week, rapidly becoming one of the best tenor players in the country.
