How many CDs do you get in the mail KW in an average month and how many of these end up in the recycled CD stores? Come on man tell us

I get f***ing heaps, but mostly coz I'm responsible for screening ALL the Sunday Herald Sun discs across all genres except classical. And it's 99% BS.
It's been a long time since I've sold any, and even then only overseas stuff.
I have found a good use for duplicate copies that I get through the paper and PBS - I send them overseas in the usually fulfilled hope they'll generate comment on one of the bulletin boards.
And I still buys lotz, most recently a couple of primo Mosaic boxes (I've caught the bug) - Gerry Mulligan and Woody Herman.
Why ask me? There's other folks who get freebies! I'm being rested from PBS (much to my dismay), but when I'm on air, a single copy of - say - Grabowsky's new CD (which is amazing) gets airplay, Melbourne press and internet coverage. So I wonder why his label wants to send me a copy?

They love you Kenny, can't you just accept that and stop complaining about getting free CDs? Not that I'm JEALOUS or anything.

I hate the way a year always takes a few months to get cooking - in music, sport, whatever. But now we ARE cooking ...
Paul Grabowsky - Big Adventure. Excuse my parochialism, but I'd much rather hear Paul with Philip and Niko than Lovano, Marsalis & Co. And this album justifies that stance. Brilliant, serpentine tunes. Incredible playing. Great sound - the bass sounds incredibly warm and soulful. Good one, Mal. Gosh - album of the year already?
Gordon Brisker - Child's Play Graeme Lyall/Joe Chindamo - Love Blues And Other Fiction. Aren't quite as keen on this as Vicki, but it sounds fine. Don Fagerquist - Eight By Eight. Incredible west coast session. Wow. An under-rated classic.

To set the record strait I was serious about Grham Lyall I have never heard of him before but i know Joe Chindamo is one of the greatest musicians on this planet his technique is so totally awesome i wish i could see him play more & i wish i could play 1/2 as good as he can

well in that case, get Joe's new cd : you'll love his work & odds are you'll be knocked out by Lyall's playing. He really is an exceptional saxophone player (as is amply shown here), and has been for many years.
his profile isn't as high as it should be, partly because he's often done gigs with tv bands or teaching ; some of his best recordings have long been out of print ; and he's just never been very career-oriented in terms of recording, chasing gigs etc.
If you want to find more Lyall on cd, you'd have to check out albums by John Sangster or Tony Gould.

isn't it a shame that there is noone doing australian back catalogue releases... so much good music that is unavailable. impossible to get unless you know a musician with a box of discs under her bed. even stuff that's relatively recent. now that would be a good way to spend funding... i'm thinking aloud...

Hell, I agree with that, being pretty much a Johnny Come Lately myself. Move have put out a couple of the Sangster Lord of the Blings Things, and Swaggie has done likewise with The Hobbitt. Swaggie also has quite a bit of back catalogue on CD I think. But that's about it. I reckon AJ and his brother prolly have the post-war years covered between them. A reissue label is the go. Maybe Jackson Sounds. Or how about Marrian Music.

Art Ensemble of Chicago - Third Decade. Been meaning to pick this one up for years and finally did it. beautiful. Charlie Parker - on savoy Cassandra Wilson and some great old piano jazz: James P Johnson Earl Hines plays gershwin early Ellington Ian Pearce - a very fine old trad player from Tasmania Chucho Valdez - shit can that man play piano
AMEN to the Oz jazz recording history project, may it happen even though I'm sure it's fated to be a financial disaster and even harder to distribute than current oz jazz cds! There's an old Ted Vining trio record i've been hunting for a while....

ps on the cd reviewing front, does Leon Gettler ever review any cds in the Age anymore except for Jarrett, Motian and Schofield???!!? He's probably been cutting and pasting the same write-up for five years now, he just has to reorder the names a little to show who's leading the band this week

Happy you can't be that happy is you are so mean to whatshisname.
Hey I've been listening to Jazztrack online more than Dig lately, it is so great to have that service but when Mal says some things I think he means the day I am listening to it not the day it was broadcast but I have been working for 3 months without a day off since boxing day so my head is a bit weird(er than usual).
So who is playing at Bennetts tonight?

nah, I'm not mad, I'm just trying to get a little discussion going, you know? I do think it's a shame that Leon doesn't seem to review local artists so much anymore (although I wouldn't be surprised to be proven wrong)
No idea who's at Bennett's tonight, I'm enjoying a quiet night at home. Note that I could have said something horrible about the inevitability of singer plus piano trio, but elected not to!!!!!
I haven't been down there for a while, must get off my arse...
