Hooo boy, here's one I didn't even know was acomin' - and there it was sitting on my desk this morning.
An outfit called the Providers - starring three guys many of us are familiar with, though for me I've always thought of them as being in somewhat different scenes.
Shows how much I know, coz Tommy McEwan (drums, vocals), Jake Mason (organ, sax, vocals) and Bob Valentine (guitar, vocals) make some kinda sweet, hot, smokin', funky, slinky, sexy, groove-laden sound.
The vocals - and harmonies - are fantastic.
The mix of covers is adroit to the max - Soothe Me, Who Were You Thinkin' Of, Some Kind Of Wonderful, Wooly Bully and more. Hell's bells - they even do one of my all-time faves, Time Is Tight. There's a few pretty cool originals, too.
Man, this has put a smile on my dial.
I hear this kinda stuff from the US quite often. And as with the Incredible Williamson Hammond Aggregation, these guys do it better than their American cousins, more organically; with more grace and spunk; as hip as you wanna be.
(Geez, sorry about the nasty whiff of nationalism there ... the point is simply a reminder that in all sorts of ways, and all sorts of sounds, location on one side of the equator or the other is no indicator of musical wonderfulness. From what I can tell, there's plenty of people in Melbourne/Australia for whom it is. I can think of some American types who play exactly this kind of music who would pack out, say, the Prince of Wales with people who would never even consider going out to see Messrs Mason, McEwan and Valentine.)
Hey guys, when's the launch? I'll be there with freakin' bells on.

Paul Grabowsky: Hush Collection vol. 3, 'Love's calendar'
The 'March' movement alone is worth the price of this record. To think that there are still people who can dismiss or ignore greatness like this because it doesn't suit them politically only shows what immaturity subisists in this wide brown land.
So shut up.
Also listening to 5+2, Invisible cities Arnold Schoenberg, Moses und Aron J. S. Bach, cantatas for Advent and, of course, Three friends in winter, by Dave and Ben and me

"I'm open minded but....." In a week where intolerance has turned violent we as musicians should try to embrace diversity. If your issue with the music comes down to taste then you are not being open minded at all. If you have a problem with the performances or the music itself, discuss it.

Just happen to be on page 31 of 'what are you listening to' and coincidently listening to the Paul Grabowsky Trio HUSH Collection Vol, 3. Beautiful music, When I first picked up the CD and read the background to its making I was expecting really gentle calming music, there's that and some swinging pieces as well, congratulations Paul, Gary and Andrew.
