Mmm, let me see... no, no, no, no, no, no and no. Nor was it FourPlay, the Four Tops or the Oarsome Foursome's greatest hits.

JJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ
Today, Vince Jones "Moving Through Taboos" - a slightly disappointing album. Seems a little laboured or something. Lacks the energy of "Live" and "Here's to the Miracles." Some great writing from Matt and Vince, but the performances are all a little bit safe. Listening to "Live" right now. By far my favourite Vince album, and in my opinion his best band (Sam Keevers, Adam Armstrong, Simon Barker and James Muller). I love all the other guys he's had since then, but those guys had the perfect balance. I first saw them at a big outdoor concert in Tassie (Feb 98)and was disappointed (I think it was one of their first gigs as a band) and then saw them at Tilley's in Canberra at the end of 98 and they were barely recognisable as the same band. That's one of those gigs that I still vividly remember the feeling of all these years later. Fantastic. The second best gig I saw them do was in early 2001 and they did an amazing version of Nature of Power to start the gig.

Australian Art Orchestra with Ruby Hunter and Archie Roach: Ruby
Really, if there's a better advertisement anywhere for the quality and importance of contemporary Australian music I would pay good money to hear it. I think the AAO simply improves and improves and this is a benchmark album.

Well into G now. Just past the half-way point for CDs (still vinyl to go). Today - the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band recordings from Verve. Next up Getz/Gilberto - enough to erase the memory of the rather hideous Stan Getz/Charlie Byrd bossa recordings.
Took a little break from the project today to listen to Al Browne's album again, courtesy of the Captain. Cheers mate.

AliMcg my right honourbale friend, when you are in power its your call mate. I agree with you about Wilkins but I think he should be drawn and quartered too.
now listening to Frank Sinatra, sometimes he was so hip and yet sometimes he was so crass

Lately I've been listening to the Necks, or at least trying to. I fail to see how this music fits into the 'Jazz' category at all. I am not questioning the wonderful musical talents of the young men involved, but to me its not Jazz. There seems to be quite a bit of music coming out of this country that is being labeled Jazz that is simply not defined by the ideas I hold for this particular music. Now, I'm not a total conservative, but surely Jazz as defined by its historical position, must have some rhythm and melody. The rhythmic aspect as I understand it is swing. This is the feel of jazz. Latin Jazz is not Jazz, it is Latin music with a solo. It doesn't swing. The Necks doesn't swing, its nice music but not Jazz. Even some 'jazz' based music is now ruining the idea of swing. Wayne Shorters new band is an example. They have moments of swing but keep breaking it up so it just ends up frustrating. That Brisbane drummer Ken Eadie does the same thing in Scott Tinklers band, I just don't get it. Why set the idea up only to destroy it. I'm sorry, but it does erk me that the idea of swing is being taken from such a beautiful music.

swing is swing. bop is bop. free is free. they are all sub-genre's of jazz - yes? imho, jazz is a concept, not a style. it's all jazz. if the performer is thinking 'jazz' when they wrote/performed/thought about it, then it's jazz. you want to like all jazz, but you just don't. deal with it.
