I believe Gerry Koster can shed some light on the new jazz show on abc fm.

It will air on Friday nights from 10:30pm, beginning February 3rd. It will be called Jazz Up Late, and it will complement Mal Stanley's Jazztrack program and will concentrate predominantly on new and recent releases in the modern jazz vein, though still with a connection to recordings from the music's history.
It will also focus on music styles that are currently influencing jazz, like world/ethnic music, electronica etc....and will be a little more adventurous than Jazztrack
However this means no more Dizzy Atmosphere! Gerry tells me another jazz show will be there in it's place though......................

aj, March - I can't believe how ill-informed you two are.
Here's the facts: The new show will be co-presented by the newly, wonderfully unemployed Eddie McGuire and Ernie Sigley - those two should deliver a nice balance between old favourites and more cuttuing edge, avant stuff. I've also been told that not every track they play will have vocals; they are determined to play at least one non-vocal track every hour. Cooooooooool!

what the fuck is "world" music? Where did that come from. What part of the World do you have to be in to play/hear it.
Weir, what is it with you and jazz vocalists dude?

Wolrd music rocks Cartman, cant believe you dont know more about it even if your only 10. The best Jazz has elements of world music in it and thats what makes it so tough.
We all know Kenny really wants to be a singer. I hear him humming along with stuff all the time, a diva in the making for sure.

World music has revitalised jazz - world music inflluences the direction of jazz instead of all the music sounding exactly like the Cds of the 50s and 60s.

to make a statement like that you must be able to give us an indication af just what world music is.

I love a lot of what is known as "World" music but I do find the name grates. I assume the name came from the term "Third World" and was modified to be less offensive to the PC police. I wonder if people in rural areas of e.g. Peru or Ethiopia ever listen to our music and call it "World".
Fela Kuti once sang: "We are not third world, we have been always first".

That is actually very Interesting Vicki "third world music" It had never coccured to me.When the Phenomena Nirvana ascended way out of control of the record companies they invented the name "Indie" which was actually an Insidious way of categorising to take control and prevent this from happening again ,particularly the money going to the wrong people and the sales eclipsing contrived acts. A similar thing happened with Bob Marley and reggae and I spose this would have been the first pigeon holing of World Music

Nicely put Dave and welcome back... I think...
What do you think people living in the third world call our music?

I'd happily argue that it's WESTERN music that should be described as "World Music". After all, it really IS played all over the world (that goes for classical, jazz and rock/pop). And I'm not interested in lefty squeamishness about "cultural imperialism" - trade and foreign policy are one thing, but culture does not pollute (unless you're a Nazi, Stalinist or Maoist).

Let's see ... Jazz started in America by descendants of people forcibly transported there from all over Africa, I think Jazz was World music long before we were all born!
It's so cute how naive and opinionated so many people are in this World. Get off the forum and and read some history!
Young people today, crikey!
