Why are vocalists not great? Well we should ask them. Hey vocalists, why are you all shit? Wouldn't it make more sense to be great? Seems so obvious to me. Maybe time for a limerick! ( has to be said with a kiwi accent)
There once was a great vocalist who everone thought was the total best, they really were shit, every last little bit, and now they're on the Tortoni list.

I'll just step in here with my favourite singer joke:
What are similarities between singers and terrorists? You can't negotiate with them and they both destroy bridges....
I love that because it's...true! No for real, as a singer, and not a blazing scatter, or a melodic innovater, but more of a tuneful, soulful, meaning of the song kind of singer, I think that people like to put labels on things and to place things in boxes... I do it all the time, and it's pretty unhelpful overall. And people like to say that only this box or that label is worthwhile, is quality, is useful!
Of course, the singer who can do something creative, rhythmic, and melodic over the changes, who can use their voice in a myriad of ways and who understands the ins and outs of form and so on -- they are really on top of their game...
But I also love to hear a simple singer with a beautiful voice...or a rough-hewn scratchy growl that has a whole lot of soul. A straight-ahead singer that chugs along and conveys meaning is, to me, as enjoyable and worthwhile as some scat-monster who forgot what the song was about.
If you are caught up in labelling jazz, creating a definitive check-list of what's good, or are sitting in your bedroom wondering why you haven't got as many gigs as some singer, that's probably why you think "vocalists are not great"...
Anyways....What's the first thing a singer does when she gets up in the morning? Gets dressed and goes home.

Oh wow! That's not the Boston correspondant is it?
Who isn't on this forum?!
Ok, here's one more
Q - How do you know when there's a female vocalist at the door?
A - She can't find the key and doesn't know when to come in.
Shit! I am dissing my own kind here...but it feels good.

once upon a time a band had a gig... singer and rhythm section. The singer said: 'hey guys can we play the way you look tonight?' to which the guitarist replied, 'okay but can we do it E and play the bridge in five and modulate to Db for the last A?' Singer: 'Um, why would we do that?' Guitarist: 'Cos that's what you did last week!'

don't you think it's interesting that when people think of the most influential jazz musicians, Parker, Coltrane, Miles (even though he's a trumpet player) get mentioned, but no one mentions any singers......
it's a different artform altogether! -and it would seem that anyone with paint-on pants is willing to have a go, and will probably get a whole heap of gigs, regardless of how bad they are. and this is probably why there are so many shit singers and also why they are universally hated. well, the bad ones anyway

Ok then-
Let's talk about the vocalists that ARE great. Some who might even be mentioned when people talk about great musicians of the past or present... I'll list a few to start (in the jazz-ish idiom...)
Louis Armstrong Ella Fitzgerald Sarah Vaughn Carmen McCrae Betty Carter Mark Murphy Chet Baker Bobby McFerrin Shirley Horn Nat King Cole Nina Simone
and from this country:
Vince Jones Gian Slater Michelle Nicolle Elana Stone Martin Breeze Julie O Hara Darren Percival Percy Robinson Carl Panuzzo Emma Gilmartin Paul Williamson (sax) Gil Askey
I would like to point out that almost all of these singers are/were proficient on atleast one other instrument...
Wow...that's just a start. I know I can come up with many more, but I'll let a few more people add to the list...
