still more from me:
marlena shaw Dianne Reeves Erykah badu Carmen McRae Helen Humes Nat King Cole Freddie Mercury I know it's been said but MEL TORME Cab Calloway!
god! The list goes on and on...
So, by IG's dialectic reasoning, words mean that music is less than it is without words...
We are creatures of language - we use words to communicate ideas, as well as gesture, physicality, other sounds...is one less than another? It makes no sense to me to say that one has less value...
My hubby just pointed out that you dont even need words to communicate an idea verbally or through song...listen to Slim Gaillard using his own jive language in "Yip rock heresy"....he's totally communicating something there, with no words I've ever heard.

Surely words are just refinement of those gestures - to tweak them toward the acute or obtuse with inflection and tone etc... Music transcends language in that regard ...because its heard elsewhere...its meaning is perceived elsewhere - I think(IG's gonna love this...) we all are just trying to sing - horn players , guitarists etc... trying to nail the art of an individual voice -through the blunt instruments we play....
what about the Jackson 5?

IG, for someone who thinks words are of so little value, you sure do seem to use words as a vehicle for spewing forth your ignorant crap. Why don't you put your playing where your mouth is? Seriously, I would love to hear you play, I want to know whether these narrow views actually contribute to good music!

re Shelly Scown's husband: Not sure on the puppeteer front, but if it was him that I saw sit in on one of Shelly's gig's with the Grabowsky trio back in 2002 when they had saturdays for a month then is a mighty fine pianist. If I am wrong, have a good old chuckle at me and let me know who it was - I'm curious. Shelly is one of my favourite Aus. singers....along with you of course, Johnny

Steve Hope is Shelly's partner. He is a really good pianist but also made wooden toys. Maybe now he gone into puppets, his toys were very cool.
