I cant believe he dissed Diana Krall – a woman with rhythmic talents Id sell my soul to the very devil for!
But a singer is a singer. It doesn’t matter what genre they apply themselves to. Sure there are different styles, but kudos to the singer who can traverse through different styles. The writer sounds like he is spending too much time watching Idol and emulating Simon Cowell. If a singer is no good – the crowd will not come back. Sure looks help – but at the end of the day, if the singer cant sing ala Britney Spears, theyre not going to get the mofo musos to perform with them are they. IMO Its when you can call a singer a “musician” that marks them as true talent. And from this gentleman’s article, he doesn’t seem to understand that the line is very fine. Just me though. I could be wrong. I think I took umbrage when he attacked lovely Diana. Gee. Writers can be mean.*wink

lex, I'm sorry, but I think you are in the minority of jazz musicians (if you are in fact a jazz musician, though not a critisism if you're not ) who will praise Diana Krall. Though, I'll admit, he does sound a bit Simon Cowell. I don't believe the audience won't come back if the music isn't good. In Adelaide, bands that get regular gigs are barely adequate. Pre-written solos, carbon copy performances every time.

I'm happy to praise Diana Krall. What's not to praise? Glad to be in a minority Mim.

Hi Mim Dont be sorry. And Im not in the minority. every male jazz muso Ive ever met thinks Diana Krall is their dream goddess - from guys like Shannon Marshall to Barney Loveland: certainly musos who have the tag of credibility attached to them. Ive had the privilege of seeing Diana live - I couldnt fault her (only the audience who had no clue what was going on; though Im sure Diana, her musos and I were happy to share the laughs - made the night more poignant really). Ive never met a jazz muso who doesnt like her. You may be the first PS Im not a jazz muso. Im a jazz muso liver ;D

Let me be the first, can't stand her. There is nothing I like about it except that I don't have to play with her, then again I'm sure she'd be happy about that too. As far as rhythmic talents go, she has none. If I got asked to describe the music in two words I'd say "banal poo".

He must therefore be quite prepared to book banal poo with no rhythmic talent. Didn't he also book you once or twice......?

I might be poo but I'm not banal, I'm bi-anal, just poo every two years.
Adrian is a sensible well balanced promoter, he books shit too!

Let me be the second.. err third to applaud her.. As it happens, just viewed and listened to Ms. Krall's Monterey jazz dvd last night. No doubting from me that she is a talented improviser, rhythmic and melodic swinger, able pianist and singer to boot! One thing I especially liked about the performance was the arrangements. Diana Krawl is a musician in the spotlight whose talent deserves recognition. Just sorry there isnt enough spotlight for everybody deserving.

She does have a talent for chosing partners! Go Elvis! Wonder if they use the rhythm method?

Dream goddess? That's not the kind of praise I was talking about! I can't say I know who Shannon Marhsall and Barney Loveland are, I assume Brisbane players? I'm not disputing their taste in women, but did they say anything about her playing or her singing? Although Davis' article has an overall harsh & bitter tone, I find his comments re Krall (and the others) to be quite accurate. Mark, you ask what's not to praise? What's to praise? (Aside from the attributes pointed out by male admirers) Edit: Haha, I posted after having the page sitting there for hours. Thanks for the back up Scott (Though I'm sure you were only too happy to put in your 2 cents).

Man, if we praised everyone who was "able" we'd not get much else done.

Man, if we praised everyone who was "able" we'd not get much else done. Praise is a great habit to get into. I love praising people who touch me in some way and bring a little light - they don't have to be geniuses. I get plenty else done don't you worry.

Barney is now in Melbourne, chomping it up with plenty of jazz musos. Shannon is whereever the gigs are. Theyre not the only ones though. There are plenty who think Diana are goddess because she can play the krap out of jazz. The Monetery DVD is an awesome one. (*reminder: watch when returning home late on Sat nite to unwind). Besides Im not surprised Scott wouldnt take to her - lyrical wouldnt be the way to go would it? (j/k) And Im happy to gush and praise anyone worthy of my praise until the cows come home. If praise means I can be a supplicant at their feet .. *starts falling to knees and waits
