ps : Mark, like ladylex, you're entitled to your opinion...............but when you maintain that Diana is an 'excellent' singer, tell me one recorded performance of hers that has touched you emotionally. "Live at the Montreal Jazz Festival DVD". Really excellent. I also have her "The Look of Love" CD and think it is excellent of its kind, in this case not so much in a jazz way, but I enjoy an occasional dose of lushly orchestrated popular music in the crack between jazz aand boss nova (with excellent singing), excellent arrangements by Claus Ogerman, excellent production and excellent studio playing all round. I don't have time to list the Ella, Carmen et al stuff that has really moved me. Supeme genius that is. I also have Joni Mitchell's (also lushly orchestrated) "Both Sides Now" CD and think that is near-genius, well above "excellent".

hey ladylex, if you really like Diana Krall's singing & playing, that's up to you........when it comes down to taste, no-one can tell you what you like. But I would ask this : have you really listened to much music by the great jazz singers ? Like Billie, Sarah, Betty, Carmen, Ella, Sheila, Shirley, Anita, to name a few ? I'd be surprised if anyone who had listened to them found Diana anything really special. Erm... Yes. And you forgot Nancy Wilson in that list too I can say Im pretty well versed in Jazz. You really shouldnt assume or 'suspect', because it could make you look like a true idiot. Shaggaz: no Im not a music journalist. But for some reason... people chase after me to write about/for them. Whatever. I look forward to the day I can immortalise your fine efforts (if I havent already) Well. Mark has put it all rather succinctly Id say. Cept.. I wasnt into Look of Love too much - LOVED the arrangments but .. i blame the label.. theyre obviously trying to sex her up and turn her into a jazz pop princess. As a result, the quality isnt as good as it was in the past.. but hey... And Live at M was brilliant. *sigh. My favourite (of Ms DK) recordings is Steppin Out. Loved John Clayton int that too.

LOL...............thanks for the advice ladylex, I'd hate to look like a true idiot.
I'll take your word for it that you've listened to and absorbed all there is to hear in the world of jazz.............even if it doesn't come across that way in so many of your bizarrely confident pronouncements.

Says the gentleman asking what Mark Sholtez has got to do with Jazz.

Now that I have listened to Mr Sholtez, I can answer your question, aj. Sweet F A. That's what he has to do with jazz. It's hardly even "jazzy". Or even "jazz-ish".
And ladylex, I think you can trust someone who runs a jazz festival such as Wangaratta to recognise that.

lol At least youve listened to it. I love it personally. But then, I know Im quite biased. I still laugh though.. because I cant help wondering when we are going to see Mr Sholtez on the Wangaratta stages for the same reasons that prompted the thoughts for Ms Krall: good promotion and ticket sales huh? Whatever. It certainly doesnt stop it from being a damned good festival though :thumb: As Mr Isaacs wrote earlier: do you actually hate their music? or their success? I mean.. come on.. Al Schmitt engineering and Christian McBride on bass! Yeh. Mark is obviously a hack for inciting such guys to play with him lol

I didn't even say I don't like it, just that it isn't jazz. There isn't anything wrong with music that isn't jazz, just as long as it isn't marketed as such. And Christian McBride on bass doesn't make it jazz either, he played with Sting too.
I can't speak for aj, but I don't see Mark Sholtez performing at Wang as a jazz act any time soon. Krall is a lot closer to jazz than Sholtez. Even if I don't like her, I can recognise the jazz elements of her music. And she plays standards.
(And, to clarify, I decided I didn't like Diana Krall when hearing her on the radio, not knowing who was singing.)

I've heard Mark Sholtez' cd, and I heard him open for Madeleine (what key are we in ?) Peyroux in Melbourne. Seems like a nice enough guy, and if his career takes off, good luck to him........but just cos he's on Verve and hired Christian McBride to play on his cd, that doesn't make it jazz.
I mean, the cd is produced by Tommy Li Puma, the man you hire when you want to remove any trace elements of jazz from the session.

Mark is obviously a hack for inciting such guys to play with him lol look, if someone can play "jazz" and make some money, good luck to them. It's nice to know that it's possible!! But their success isn't proof of their greatness. Wow, christian mcbride... he's really good. but a bad singer is still a bad singer regardless of how amazing the bassist is. (not a direct comment... haven't heard this mark sholtez person.... just making a point) m6
