look, if someone can play "jazz" and make some money, good luck to them. It's nice to know that it's possible!! But their success isn't proof of their greatness.
Nailed it M6 - resentment at others success is a different issue to contempt for their music.....

;D Adrian- you are soooooo funny ("what key are we in" Madeleine). I was at that bizarre gig (do I love what she does, or do I HATE it? still don't know....), but missed Mark Sholtez (came at the break). Don't really know his stuff, but I heard a couple tracks on his site, and I wouldn't say he's a jazz artist either. But hey, Norah Jones is on Blue Note and she doesn't sing jazz....
So, good on 'em I suppose. I don't resent Krall, Norah Jones, or Sholtez for their success in an extremely tough business.
I don't particularly dig Diana Krall's music, but if she introduces new ears to the "jazz" genre, than I have to thank her for that I suppose.
I think I might go hear Jamie Cullum next week, and Mark Sholtez is opening for him, so I'll perhaps give my opinions after the fact...

Kenny, you make me laugh. And I love the shoes! They are the cutest.
Ali, when & where is Jamie Cullum on here? I might join you, depending on how much it costs...

After you Tim ! I'm sure Jamie Cullum is your kind of rebellious, jazzy pop star..........I'll know for sure next time I see you dancin' on top of the piano.

Palais Theatre, next Wednesday, $71.50. Kenny, you coming? AJ? Tinky? Um, I've heard the recordings of both artists. The answer is no.

You would think so, AJ, but we played 5 rounds that night, and Sam was spotting me most of that $, and then I bought in a couple of times as well... UGGGH. I came in 2nd twice, but I didn't get any money because there wasn't a full table. Coming in 2nd at poker sucks! But I still love the game and there is always next week....

It just occurred to me that noone has mentioned Shooby Taylor in this thread. I mean if you can talk about Nora Jones and Jamie Cullum in a jazz context - what about Shooby? Hey - at least the guy improvised. He was definitely a "speaking in tongues" singer - not unlike those Bible Belters who go into a babbling trance in a state of worship.
I think he may have been onto something .....or was it just on something?
Maybe Im on something... I kind of dig shooby........help!
