I have not been to a gig since Wangaratta. I do not expect to go to a gig until the NEXT Wangaratta. That's a pretty controversial credo for someone like you Kenny, as in jazz critic, broadcaster, commentator, fan etc. I'm surprised there's been no comment.

Tall Poppy Grower. The only thing that surprises me about you is that you are still being such a wanker!! You continue to acuse people of things they never said! I work with Chris Tanner too....YOU IDIOT! I've got a horrible feeling I do know exactly who you are.....and I actually like you in person. A LOT. Strange how bi-polar a computer can make people seem. But you are been a total wanker. Peace....you say ? More like death and famine everywhere!? Hippy-war-mongerer. Take your pills and chill the f... out. This is truly weird shit

Hell, just because you're the best of friends "out there" doesn't mean you can't hate each other's guts "right here"!

"Missy Elliot and Timbaland forged a new style of music by being very focused on TRYING to do something new"
Yeh, that's right Missy Elliot has really shocked us so much with her originality. Absolutely groundbreaking. We'll all stop what we're playing now and copy her. It's like when Miles released Kind of Blue or when we first heard Ornette.
Any other wise comments Tall poppy grower?

I agree with TPG,
its just that your ears are too "educated' to hear true and fresh music ... just out of interest, which missy records do you have again?

In Kenny's defence - a lot of us who are prepared to pay more have day jobs so gigs that don't start til late don;t get attended by those of us who have to get up early. Gigs that started at 7.30 or 8 during the week would surely get more attendance.

Dianne,
She's hardly creating a new style - in fact she'll be another unknown two years time.

Gigs that started at 7.30 or 8 during the week would surely get more attendance. That's certainly part of it. But for me also, it's a sad state of affairs that so many jazz/improv gigs take place in the same murky venues that host grunge, thrash, industrial noise, metal of all sorts etc etc. I've been a rock pig of one sort or other for more than three decades, and there's been large swathes of my past in which I considered such venues my natural habitat. But just now I've had enough. It's appalling that the potential audience of the players I adore is largely disenfranchised by the nature, location and schedules of the venues.

Listen beaatch Missy has been on the cutting edge for at least 8 years!
You are obviously into dull music, which is cool, just keep it at home,
while we ROCK OUT

SMALLS in New York have an afternoon session on the weekends, which is great. I have two little kids, so gigs at night are hard to see (babysitters make it too expensive - I rather pay it to the band) Sunday afternoon jazz at a pub is an option sometimes, but not so pleasant for me or the little ones as people aren't generally interested in the music, just in drinking lots (not that there's anything wrong with that).
So if Bennett's Lane had an afternoon session, us old dags would be there!

Filtered beats and rhymes that say nothing, it's all so old. But if it helps you feel down with the kids then knock yourself out.

The only thing new is the new in your name grandpa,
dont have a conniption fit when you read the next line:
The music you love is dead

Dianne, thing is, you can't hear that Missy Elliot is just the same old shit repackaged for people who are addicted to cultural capital: yeah I'm so groovy 'cos I'm into the latest hip shit just look at me go... those old dudes just don't get it. It reminds me of the latest Coke advertising, you know the one that goes on about the 'way things should be'. Bald simplistic statements about music and culture that you and TPG are fond of making just don't hold up to any kind of examination.
