Four of these things belong together Four of these things are kinda the same But one of these does not belong here... That's right - the first one is another easy listening, nostalgia trip that belongs on the muzak tapes played in supermarkets. If it wins it'd be an insult to any musician playing creative music in this country.

and there we have another typical OJF post i.e. mud slinging aimed at any australian who dare appeal to the masses predictable and dull Here, here Freddy, Don Burrows has contributed an outstanding amount to this artform for over 60 years! I personally think he has done something right by appealing to the masses! Don't fall into the trap of thinking unpopular is good, popular is merde.

The over 60s? They have a right to their music but if they cared about jazz why not just listen to the records of the time? Does this record add anything to the music of that time? I don't think so, but you obviously disagree.

I personally think he has done something right by appealing to the masses! Don't fall into the trap of thinking unpopular is good, popular is merde. Don's greatest conribution was his successful campaign to set up a Jazz Studies at the Sydney Con. It was the first one in this country. However, there are many, negatives about his other activities as a jazz personality. As a musician he is/was a very good one without being outstanding or original. Do you object to jazz being portrayed as a nostalgia music, because i do? It's regressive and undermines the scene.

Actually, I wasn't talking about Don... Mmmm. . .Mark S., perhaps? In which case, as I haven't heard the CD it would have been wiser to note that and say of the others that Don's didn't either. I'll give myself an uppercut. Of course The Necks, when talking to rock music writers who adore them but hate jazz, say they don't play jazz, although that's absolute nonsense.

I love the Mark Sholtez album. And dammit - its a freaking awesome opp for other Australian jazz musos too. Christian McBride is on there for chrissakes.. Tommy LiPuma. Al Schmitt, Rob Mounsey on keyboards, Geoffrey Keezer on Piano, Bob Mann on guitar, Chris Potter on sax and Lewis Nash on drums. Its wicked. And with such notables- how can it not be? PS Hi Glen

PS Hi Glen : Yesterday I went into town, picked this up and checked out the line-up. I can now see what alimcg was referring to. . .and I agree. THIS DOESN'T BELONG IN THE LIST. Anybody with money or access to it can go and put together a band of American musicians. This doesn't belong on the list as it's not an Australian record and Don's doesn't belong for aesthetic reasons.
